It’s been almost five months since Donnis, the budding talent from Atlanta, has graced the pages of DJBooth, but the man’s obviously been busy. New leak Blackberry Molasses provides a change of pace from last September’s Tonight, slowing things down with Crada and Organized Noize’s mellow flip of Mista’s ’96 hit of the same title. Over a warm, rolling piano Donnis flows about the harsh realities of life as he struggles to find his niche in the rap game. With Mista’s smooth, soulful harmonies layering the hook and Donnis’ honest writing, it’s hard not to be moved by some of the rhymes: “I spend my nights alone prayin’, sayin’, if I can get one hit I’ll stay far away from Satan.” The DJBooth Freestyle alum describes everyday life as it is, the good and the bad, and he does it well. Maybe I’m just a sucker for 90’s r&b samples (which I totally am) but I thought this was an excellent effort by Donnis, not to mention the quality boardwork from Crada and Organized Noize to match. Those vibing out to Molasses can only hope that his upcoming and unscheduled project, Southern Lights, is equally as sweet.

Donnis meets Maxwell? " Blackberry Molasses" is unexpected and highly enjoyable.

The production was kool and calm. Donnis spit some real reflective verses on the track. I really liked the hook.

Absolutely beautiful song. I know Donnis needs to make tracks like Tonight to get that widespread appeal, but this is the kind of track I've been waiting for from him.

Definitely a change of pace for Donnis but a good song nonetheless.

Ok, I can dig it. I'm not impressed with the the beat, but lyrics and vocals work well here.

Donnis keeps proving again and again that aside from bangers like "Gone", "Country Cool", "Eat You Alive" and such.. he can also drop some really dope joints that have mad lyrical content and storytelling. One MC on the rise that everyone should keep their eye on!
