It’s been a year – almost to the day – since up-and-coming singer Dondria stepped into the Booth with her last feature, potential single selection Boy Stop, and her debut album still has yet to hit store shelves. Despite the setbacks, the rising soul starlet’s keeping the faith, confident that the man upstairs has big plans for her musical career. On new single You’re the One, she expresses a similar outlook on romance, telling her new fella that, though their relationship’s fallen on tough times, “I don’t believe we were put together not to be together.” Co-producers (and songwriters) Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox take this track to church with a gospel-flavored instrumental, blending warm organ tones and muted horns as Dondria shows off her powerful pipes – the end result has a classic vibe that fans of retro-informed R&B will find hard to resist. Dondria vs. Phatfffat is set to (finally) hit stores in Spring 2010 – in the meantime, keep it locked to our front page for all the latest tunes.

She has a voice - you cannot deny that. To this point, she has been given plenty of production muscle. Frankly, she just needs an opportunity to put out her product with a decent push.
I really dig this old-school vibed record, but I am not sure its what radio will embrace enough to have that spring release stick. Can Urban-AC grab ahold of this newcomer? What do you all think?

It might not grab the new ADD-generation, but for anyone who got raised on old school soul (shout out to my pops for making me memorize Otis Redding records back in the day), this is simply quality music from a quality artist. Sometimes less is more, and this track breathes in all the right places.

Despite her name (Phatfffat!?) and the mishandling of whatever by JD… the girl got skills. The chick can sing. However, I had no idea she could sing like THIS. Much better than her previous features.
The organs really give it a soulful feel. Background harmonies are really on point, the overall vibe is completely refreshing. If I promise to buy a copy of this album, can they PLEASE stop referring to this child as phatfffat?! |

Dondria's vocal talent is amazing but I'm not sure I can say the same about this song. A sucker for slow jamz I just can't vibe with this one. I do appreciate her talent and display of it on this track but there's something that is making me miss the SoE and Dondria connection and if I can't connect with her then how can I connect to her music?
I know that I'm in the minority with this one because it's done well on the music charts including The Booth's R&B. JD knows how to back great music but I question if Cox could have taken You're the One to a better place solo. Regardless of my personal feelings the Dondria's talent and lyrics are exceptional which is why it gets to rotation rating |
