Before you listen to up-and-coming Ohio native Dominique Larue’s newest track, You’re a Star, please dismiss this unfortunately popular equation: female + hip-hop = Nicki Minaj. You’re not going to see any pink hair or hear any references to America’s favorite doll here, but you are going to hear some real hip-hop, and that’s what matters. Following her generally well-received DJBooth debut Fall ‘96, Star marks Larue’s second Booth feature, and is a praiseworthy follow-up, providing every crucial element of a hit track. This upbeat head-nodder has Larue crafting a freestyle-like ode to her man over a progressive tempo featuring intermittent layers of shine and grit provided by AntMan Wonder. Lyrically, Dom doesn’t hide how she feels about that special someone: “I wanna be where you are / in your mind, in your heart.” Will listeners be similarly head over heels with this feel good track? We’ll find out soon. You’re a Star will be included on Larue’s exclusive, DJBooth.net-featured album HerStory, due out February 25.

Damn she got soul, very old school 90's production, and I also hear a little Mary J. in the lyrics there, any one else agree?

I hope listeners will be able to put aside the fact that Larue is female and focus on the music. As they say (whoever "they" is): don't judge a book by its cover. This is dope hip hop.

Pretty good. Maybe it's just all the other great music I heard on the booth tonight but this just seems a bit pale in comparison. The lyrics are extremely well put together and the production is fantastic but it seems to drag on after a while. Maybe it's just a bit too repetitive.

haha she better than some of those males rappers featured yesterday...great lyrics but i wish her flow, flowed more like a river but hey you can't have your cake and eat it to i guess...and the hook aint all of that, and the beat is cool but i wish the prouducer was a little more creative... the ending was really abrupt....but im telling her to keep doing her thang and don't let my rating get you down cause im expecting more

I have to say that this is lacking a bit of the soul of Fall 96, I just didn't connect as strongly, but this is still an entrancing track from ome of the best young new talents in the game.

Columbus stand up!

hhhmmmm nice beat there, good voice and love that chorus with that chipmunk (again and again), but a song like this I think should be sang by a male, 4 stars though.

And btw, why do artists love to use the chipmunks voice?

Wasn't feeling it lyrically maybe due to it being an ode to a significant other... It still alludes me why her man is a star just sounds like a school girl crush song/first phases of love type thing. Agree with dude bout the hook.. The hook needed to be stronger which is probably why I didn't get it lyrically. Regardless of gender, flow was alright, grows on ya it's got potential strong in a laid back chilled out way it'll get even better which is the reason I'll watch out for her name to hear what she drops next
