Dolla - Georgia Nights
Artist: Dolla
Producer: Ear Hustla
Album: Unreleased
Label: The Gang Ent./Konvict Muzik
Tired of watching his long-awaited debut album, most recently titled A Dolla and A Dream, collect dust on the label shelves, Dolla decided it was time to part ways with Jive Records. Like so many other victims of label politics (see the Clipse, Joe Budden, Stat Quo), the Atlanta native may find that these issues motivate him to tackle deeper lyrical themes. On Georgia Nights, Dolla addresses his life struggles, particularly the string of early deaths in his family, and ultimately arrives at the conclusion that he must simply keep moving in spite of the pain. Producer Ear Hustla provides a fittingly melancholy backdrop, complete with a sample of blues standard Rainy Night in Georgia (popularized by Brook Benton and later covered by the likes of Ray Charles and Hank Williams, Jr.). Though Dolla’s label team expects the album to drop this fall, don’t be surprised if he stays in the underground for a while, joining a class of MCs skilled at building their raindrops into water fountains.

Not a huge Dolla fan, I just don't see any lyrical or strategy creativity. Took the safe approach by dropping singles with T-Pain and Akon, and he really hasn't done much to solidify himself from any other up and comer.
Production was sub-par on here and he spit the way he always does. The game is gettin deep, dude needs to step it up to stay relevant. |

This is another solid one. Dolla showcased his lyrical skill on this one. The sample is soulful. Sounds like somethin Jay would rhyme over.

This is actually one of the best songs I have heard from Dolla.... ever. The soulful oldschool sample is enjoyable, as is his more serious tone. He will have to come with some more heat to convince the masses, but this is a nice start.

Ya' know... This song really doesn't deserve it's bad scores it's been getting... I mean of course this ain't no superior track either but I'm just sayin... Personally I think it's all cause of Dolla's name and his street cred that he has little of but any-who... Production was good delivery was average, nothing too special overall... 2.5-3 stras from me...

I like the energetic beat but I don't like the background sample, I find it doesn't fit the type of music. He sounds good as usual! I heard better from Dolla, this is ok

I am not a fan of songs where the hook is basically a sample. But this song is anyway much better than that fabricated shit that he was doing at Jive. Dolla just isn't THAT special as an artist. Sorry to say it. 2 1/2

~WOW~, the jury's still out on you. We agree with each other on which bangers to enjoy (and which trends need to stop), but I don't know why the low ratings are there (including yours). If anything, his prior two singles got obnoxious after a while.
This is a good start-getting deep, plus any song that samples "Rainy Night in Georgia" gets instant props from me. I'm giving this a 4, hoping to encourage Dolla to keep doing these introspective jams throughout his independent career. |
