Cali legends DJ Quik & Kurupt are known for repping the West, but Hey Playa, the lead single off their forthcoming collaborative LP, finds the duo in a different “West” than listeners may expect: here, the twosome take a trip down to the Western Sahara, and party all night to the sweet sounds of Moroccan Blues.  Quik’s unique, body-moving beat, complete with a suitably exotic sample (taken from an episode of Andrew Zimmerman’s Bizarre Foods), sets the stage as he and his Dogg Pound partner-in-rhyme pass the mic back and forth, spitting dreamy descriptions of festival days and revelry-filled nights. In contrast to Kurupt‘s carefree lyrical presence, Quik ends the record on a foreboding note (“[I’ll] remove you from who you love, I’ll keep you trapped in your mind”) but, hey, even the friendliest locales have their dark sides.  Catchy, energetic, and just a tad spooky, Hey Playa is sure to raise anticipation for The Blaqkout LP, set to drop June 9th.

While Dr. Dre continues to keep "Detox" in the vault, someone needs to pick up the reigns for the West Coast and who's more qualified than DJ Quik and Kurupt? Quik's production is still fresh to this day after almost 20 years in the game. Both of these dudes are mad underrated and I know this track isn't their full potential.

Agree with what "Jordan Hung" said. They can do better. Different than what I was expecting, but rotation.

Dope beat, dope rhymes, but just NOT enough to turn unknowing listeners into full-blown fans.

Sidebar: I wish they would have traded off lines within a few verses, instead of waiting until the final verse to each spit. Interaction among two emcees can make or break a record...

KURUPT!!! Haha maybe one day, MC Eiht will return from his coffin stay...haha doubtful, but who knows. An interesting sample/risk taken by DJ Quik ,I think it paid off. Some strange harmonizing going on in the background, but after a listen or two, it sounds really good. And the lyrics were hot as hell, especially the first verse. DPG!!! I give it a biased 5 stars out of 5.

Has DJ Quik touch-utilization various instruments in addition to a clear delivery of lyrics. I would definitely play it, however, not sure if crowd would be ready for it.

I'm biases toward Quik, always been a big fan...and even though he's changed up his style a little bit from when he was REALLY killin' it (Safe N Sound - Under Tha Influence), I'm still lovin' it. To be honest I've also always a had a soft spot for young gotti - "Streez is a Mutha" maybe being one of my top 10 albums...

With all the "slash" artists these days, give some props to Quik for maintaining as a producer/emcee for 20 some years now...damn.

To know that Quik flipped this sample from Bizarre Foods makes it that much more amazing. I love the originality and they both spit quality verses. Very good collabo, better than "Wathca Wanna Do" but I still expect more from them in the future...

@ Anyone - I've been trying to find the story behind the falling out of Quik and his old crew: 2nd II None, Hi-C and ESPECIALLY fixxer mate and long time collab-mate AMG! Does anyone know the source of this BEEF?? Did anyone else hear that diss track "F**K Y'all" they put out....I'm looking for answers.

Oh yeah...3.5...but rounding up to a BANGER.

The beat is the main point of this song, I love it. The melody is confused, though. The verses are ok, the hook so and so. In rotation

I like the beat and the sample is pretty cool, although it sounds a lil outta place at times. The hook is pretty weak, but that's not the main focus of the track Ne-way. The flows are super tight, and thats all that really matters on this one.

I'm with the@rizz I'm bias toward the Quik. He is one of the freshest ever. He's kinda lost his way in my opinion. He need to catch that smooth jazz style vibe he usta have. That is when he was it his best, pitch in on a party type @*#$!. This is not bad, I think its kinda cool actually. Kurupt the kin@pin is always West Coast royalty. Nuff said !

I kind of like the production on here. The Wire images pop up in my head when i hear this. The chorus is wack to me. The flows on here aren't necessarily bad...it just does nothing for me though. I know i won't be listening to it again.
