DJ Premier - 5%
Artist: DJ Premier
Featuring: KRS-One
Producer: DJ Premier
Album: Year Round Records: Get Used to Us
Label: Year Round
So here’s how it goes. Everyone who saw the words “DJ Premier”, “KRS-ONE” and “Grand Puba” in the headline and knocked over their grandma to press play – you and I are friends. Everyone else? I’m watching y’all with a wary eye. After a few weeks of radio rip foolery, the aforementioned trifecta’s single, 5%, has finally emerged in high-quality form, and the result’s as dope as we had hoped. Primo sets the stage with his trademark balance of knocking drums and soaring strings (does he ever fail?), setting up KRS perfectly for an intelligently vicious flow and hook that the world would do well to listen to. Add in a guest verse from Brand Nubian vet Grand Puba, whose nasal, “he just said what?” flow will have my fellow ‘80s babies thinking of the good ol’ days, and you’ve got a track overflowing with old school integrity yet is thankfully devoid of old school nostalgia. 5% is only the tip of the iceberg – the rest can be found on Premier’s new compilation album, Year Round Record: Get Used to Us, available now.

There is a reason why Premier is a legend in this "game." Take a listen to "5%" and tell me that claim isn't gospel. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have emcees like KRS-One and Grand Puba along for a ride.

After all these years, Primo has never failed and here he proves he still hasn't lost his magic touch.
Dope lines from both KRS and Grand Puba too. |

Finally, I’ve been waiting for this feature since the radio ripped version was released in the beginning of November.
This is that CLASSIC Premo right here, he’s still completely original. I know some people don’t like the footsteps throughout the song, but I do. Those footsteps are GODS COMING. The beat was originally made for Rakim back in the late 1990’s early 2000’s when he was with Dr Dre’s label. I mean absolutely no disrespect to the legendary Grand Puba of Brand Nubian, but I would’ve loved to see Pete Rock rhyme over this beat. I can’t wait for “Return of the Boom Bip.” We won’t hear anything new until KRS comes back from his 2 month tour sometime in January. Primo’s also rumored to produce Jayz’s entire Black album. He’s also rumored to do an entire album with Nas too. I’d much rather see an entire Nas/Premier album. If you guys love Premo like I do check his blog out. djpremierblog.com |

And to add to Nathan's review, 5% is also the 1st single off Return of the Boom Bip. Premo's going to produce the entire album.
Can't wait to hear more. |

When i was reading everyones comment before listening to this, i thought to myself "Wow, this must be a great song. Everyone is calling it a CLASSIC". And then i pressed play and i could tell right there that it indeed is a striaght classic. This is such a deep, thoughtful, powerful record. I loved every single second of this song. It just hooked me in and never let me go. DJ Premier did amazing on his verses in this. His lyrics are have wonderful quality, and they stay on point with the message protray in this record. Also, im really liking the feature from KRS-One. He was a perfect fit for this record. He defenitly gave his part, strongly in this, making this song that much better. The production from himself was also another wonderful peice to this record. It really fit the song perfectly, bringing everything together, nicely. This is a classic record and will be very well known for a long time to come. Its a overall, amazingly strong quality and greatness. Good job DJ Premier. I cant wait to see whats next from him. I love his work, and how he does his work. He is such a talented dude. And im a long time fan and going to be a fan for life.

this is a track hip hop has needed. Badly. Premier is unparalleled in his sampling and consistency. Sure his beats have a formula, but @*#$! does that formula work. KRS is perfect on a beat like this, It would have been an insult to rap music to put a young gun like wayne on a track like this. Maybe if rappers started "third eye seeing", the game would be in a better state.

85% of the music fans love the current music trends, 10% like the trends, but crave some realness and the 5% know the 85% is getting nothing but junk music to go with their junk food. Which are you?
