Former revolutionaries turned revolutionary gangstas dead prez penned the definitive “I’m going to hit on you by not hitting on you” track with the 2000 release of Mind Sex (with Black Star’s Brown Skin Lady a close second), and now a decade later they’re back to their flattering ways on new mixtape leak The Beauty Within. Although released in part as a Mother’s Day tribute, Beauty Within is an ode not just to mothers, but to the beauty of natural black women everywhere. Essentially a freestyle over the Smeezingtons’ uber-smash beat for B.o.B.’s Nothin’ on You (plus a revamped hook), Beauty finds M-1 and stic.man paying tribute to, as they put it, “not to America’s top model, but to the natural girls right next door.” It’s undoubtedly an uplifting and worthy message, but is the music every bit as good as the message? The revolution begins yet again when dead prez’s upcoming release DJ Drama Presents: Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz drops on June 10.

I know we are a day late on this record (it was released for feature on Mother's Day), but we liked it so much we extended its great message and uplifting positivity a day longer (yup, its worth it).
If you listen and only compare this version to B.o.B's smash hit single I have a feeling you will (sadly) come away disappointed. However, if you listen for the message and can appreciate the spin...

nice word play...i would mix this in with the orginal version...but i would take that hook out and that girl can't sing...and this falls short from b.o.b.'s classic...nice try though...and i still like dead prez...but verses are still hot...just that hook is a fail.

Damn liking the flow and wordplay on this. Liking the lyrics and meaning behind them. Beat is a classic. With the different lineup on this, it still sounds good.

I'm trying not to compare this to B.O.B's original, but it's kinda hard not to. Not comparing it it's not bad, but I'm not liking the voice of the girl singing. Dead Prez's verses were pretty good.

ahh dead prez been a fan of him for a minute now. Great message and I appreciate it for what it is worth. He spits good voices and yeah the girl is annoying and could have been better. Good song for the mothers day though.

Considering the fact that he took the beat of an already classic song, I was expecting nothing less than amazing. Prez did not let me down. He really did a great job especially with the hook. I could relax to this all day. Prez is one of the greats for a reason.

Love the first verse after that the song falls off. I'm with giving everyone a fair opportunity to jump on a track but this chick ain't no Bruno Mars. Kinda reminds me of what I sound like in the shower :/
I liked the Avatar reference one of my favorite creative elements of the movie just wish the song had more of those. Can't go too wrong with a positive song dedicated to women on Mother's Day. |

Wow i miss the level of lyricism and depth of Dead Prez. Of course at this point, that girl doesn't sound quite right because i'm so used to Bruno coming in, but her message holds strong. I would definitely mix this with this original. Can't wait for more from Prez.

I'm all about uplifting rhymes and positive messages in hip hop, but what's up with all the recycled beats this week? This is rotation worhty, but basically it's a remixed cover. B.o.B x Bruno Mars > Dead Prez.

This was a great idea... the production is poppy but still dope, Dead Prez always come wit great flows, and the message is perfect. I just wasn't feelin the hook as much as Bruno Mars', but it is still a banger.

It's hard to find anything wrong with this one. Personally I prefer my dead prez angrier, but this is exactly the kind of song I'd want my daughter to hear, and that's a hell of a compliment.
Who thought we'd see the day when a prez-DJ Drama project was in the works?

He's a really good writer, but I think he needs to work on his delivery a bit. In the beginning when he started rapping I thought he was just still talking.

dead prez was already getting at least a 3 before the song even started cos of the beat. his first verse completely blew me away, i was expecting something good but not that good. the hook was good too, the girl had a nice voice. lovely message to this song which makes me love it even more. dead prez took a classic, flipped it on its head but kept the classic rating

I like this track… or do I like the message of this track more? Nah, a lot of great substance is said in the verses, as you would expect from dead Prez. Sure the vocals on hook fails to impress but I dig it, especially when you listen to every word.

Not really a fan. Prez didnt really impress me with his flow or his lyrics (he was ok, though not anywhere near his best). Ive heard the production to much lately so its just becoming irratating to my ears. The revamped hook is also pretty ordinary and dosnt compare to the original.
