Don’t let the stage name fool you: D.C. Don Juan may have borrowed his moniker from literature’s most legendary womanizer, but those who assume the Booth newcomer’s a lover rather than a fighter may be surprised by the aggressive tendencies he showcases on his latest single. Kicked off with a shout of “Everybody Hands Up, it’s a robbery!”, this hard-hitting cut finds Pretty Girls production crew The Best Kept Secret flipping a tweaked version of the beat from Dr. Dre‘s The Next Episode as Don Juan performs a lyrical shakedown, demonstrating just how unstoppable he is when he’s in pursuit of the Almighty dollar. Focused squarely on the pursuit of paper, Don Juan’s bars nonetheless come laced with enough witty turns of phrase to keep lyrical heads entertained; in addition to expressing dissatisfaction with being “slept-on like the Days Inn,” he tells his peers “If grind was a breast, you’d be an A-cup.” Like what you’re hearing? Keep it locked – the artist’s Juanted (Destroy & Rebuild) LP has yet to receive a solid release date from Battery/Jive, but we’ll be sure to bring you all the latest.

This is pretty decent, DC put in some solid work on this track. The flipped dre sample is a plus. I dont really see myself giving this any further play however. I feel it wouild get lost on my iPod.

One of those records that immediately catches your ear because of the sample... but also keeps you interested once the sample dies down into the background. Good stuff, Don.

With a beat this insanely dope it's easy for an emcee to get lost in the production, but DC did well to keep his head above water. Lyrics didn't blow me away, but still a really solid performance.

I really liked the single Looky Lookie, cuz the metaphors and punches were clever and witty, and I've also heard him on lots of features throughout the city...and have come to expect that same smart, cocky, sexy flow from him. So I was a little unimpressed with this track. It's not bad, but its not something I could see him performing (great live performer btw), or hear on the radio, or imagine in the club either. Its like that filler track in the album that rides out. I hope it's not his next single.
He's one of my favorite artists...but I just wasnt feelin this one fam. |
