David Banner - Who's That (The Mixtape Song)
Artist: David Banner
Producer: David Banner
Album: MTA 3: The Trinity Movement
Label: b.i.G. f.a.c.e.
Do you ever get the feeling there’s someone peeping in your window – a heavyweight rapper/producer, perhaps? Well, don’t look now, but it’s very possible the fella in question is none other than “David-D-D-David Banner.” Today, the Jackson native makes his return to our pages with Who’s That (The Mixtape Cut), which actually isn’t a mixtape cut at all, but rather the latest leak off Mississippi: The Album 3. After one of the most chaotic intros I’ve heard a good long while, this track settles into a marginally calmer, but still quite aggressive synth groove (courtesy of the artist himself) as Banner strikes a lyrical balance between street-oriented braggadocio and the socially-conscious rhymes he dropped on his last feature, Strange; in between insights on issues facing the African-American community, the artist works in a little dope talk and cracks wise about the well-known perils of dropping soap in prison showers. Craving more? Well, you’ve got plenty to look forward to in the months ahead – both MTA3: The Trinity Movement and 9th Wonder collabo Death of a Pop Star are set to drop “soon.” Keep it locked!

Ask anyone in the industry why we don't hear socially conscious rhymes in mainstream music and they'll all say the same thing - its hard to make it sound fresh.
David Banner clearly thinks that stereotype is a bunch of bullsh*t, however, as he flips his own screwed/sampled/cut production into the most unexpected background for soap box lines about BP and the African American employment issues. I'm not saying you ever left, but its great to have you back David. |

Always been a fan of this man behind the boards, but as a rapper, he just doesn't really do it for me. His street ready beat was the high point for me and the semi-chopped up sampled hook was also a plus. Unfortunately, his verses seemed a little half-assed. Eh, probably wouldn't listen to this again.

Banner had two modes - socially conscious and street - he's like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of rap.
It's obvious which Banner we're getting here, and I dig it. This beat could have easily been about whips and booties, but the man goes to work on the mic. Respect. |
