Custom Made - A Few Friends
Artist: Custom Made
Producer: Chris "THX" Goodman
Album: The Lost Weekend
Label: Custom Made Recordings
Not everyone can be a social butterfly; those determined to march to the beat of their own drummers are often content with A Few Friends tuned into their wavelength. Such is apparently the case with Bluff, Element, Scoobs and Six of Custom Made, a Los Angeles foursome who, true to their collective name, come with a sound that doesn’t quite fit the mold. At first listen, the most striking facet of the group’s first Booth feature is Chris “THX” Goodman’s instrumental, which establishes a darkly catchy lo-fi groove by way of a few unique samples and provides an intriguingly off-kilter accompaniment to the emcees’ aggressive underground rhymes. The choice to forgo the traditional hook in favor of off-the-cuff spoken-word samples adds to the cut’s rough feel, but the first speaker says it best: “F*ck keeping it real, keep it raw… when you’re damn raw you know what you’re dealing with, so anything out the ordinary, it ain’t out the ordinary.” A Few Friends can be found on forthcoming street album The Lost Weekend, a compilation of tracks recorded during the sessions for ‘07 mixtape Truth Be Told.

That production is what made me love the track. I can see why some are sayin its just mediocre, but I think the simplicity of it is where the beauty/inrigue is. The emcees came wit some nice intensity on their verses. I'm feelin the entire vibe on this one.

I'd like to hear my local ice cream man play this as he rides around town. I kid. No, but seriously, this is how you need to come with it if you are an underground emcee. Full of passion, energetic, and plenty of substance. Nice production from THX.

I'm not feelin this beat at all. This one ain't for me. Custom sounds like they have a hu@e East Coast influence. Wu tan@ in particular. They have a different style, I wanna hear more from them, but this beat is not @ood.

This is another pass for me. It's ok at best but I think bornoxious is a good definition for this song (boring and obnoxious lol.)...1.5?

BDF took the thoughts right out of my cerebrum, specially in the second verse you can hear the Wu Tang resemblence
I, unlike BDF, like the simplicity of the beat...the guys sound average...so it all comes down to one question...would i listen to this again? probably not...2 1/2 stars |
