With a name like Cubbiebear, you’d think the Baltimore emcee raps about hugs and stuffed animals. You’d be wrong. If his music is any indication, Cubbiebear chose his name to set himself as far apart as possible from all the ‘Lils’s and ‘Young’s out there. His new single, The Hulk, is as un-mainstream as you can get. Lyrically, he’s all over the place, cramming a glut of words into each disjointed line. The frenzied hook is equally incoherent (although not nearly as verbose), featuring some hyperactive scratches and what sounds like alien babble. The stuttering beat, also the work of Cubbiebear, makes the song all the more hectic and all the more fresh. The Hulk appears on his debut album, The Rape.

this dude can spit his ass off. @*#$! was used 4 shock value. I choose to give him a pass here since he's so sick. The production is Noise here so I most likely won't listen to this again, but I would like to hear more from this CRA...

Lyrics is like a million ping-pong balls hitting u you almost at once at random speeds, each ball has lots of quality but at a point u're too busy trying to digeest one that it becomes just simple noise...the beat and production does absolutely nothing to help the matter!

While I do NOT agree with the choice to title an album after an awful, despicable act like rape, I get the shock value concept (oh, hey Nas.) As for this song, damn... can you say you've ever heard anything like it? Dude can spit, point blank. Let's hear more...

This is very original but I don't like it, I listened 2 minutes and then stopped the player. I can't listen to a song which has no melody at all! The beat reminds me of Kanye's Stronger though, they aren't so similar but they belong to the same type: computerized/futuristic! I rate this 2,5 for its originality and this dude can become famous, I like his flow

i don't understand how lil john can win a grammy for dropping three chords over an overcompressed 808 beat while the production on cubbiebear's tracks are labeled as disfunctional noise because he actually spent time arranging it...
this is rediculous...especially when it's compared to kanye west's "stronger" which is only a terrible daft punk cover song, in other words, not a kanye west production... the song is incredibly progressive, reminiscent of the best of el-p's work during "fantastic damage" or the golden age projects with company flow...as for the ping pong ball review, i know you were trying to write with negative context, but you highlighted all of the best aspects of this track... the hulk is just that...massive, unstoppable and destructive...this song breaks down every wall your punk ass has hid behind since you decided you knew what hip hop was...i'm sorry but your bet bullshit is fallacious and your idols with their nestea filled hennessy bottles and self inflicted gunshot wounds will no longer be able to hold their pipe cleaner crowns in the air with an ounce of respect pointed in their directions...at least not from our corner homey...and we're coming into the next round tossing haymakers... you have been warned... |

Understand this, that Cubbie doesn't use the words @*#$! and rape for shock value. If you actually thought twice about what he's saying in the song you'd notice that he's against the use of the word because of it's negative connotation. He doesn't call someone a @*#$! in the song, he raps about how stupid it is that someone would let someone else call them a @*#$!, downgrading them self just so they feel accepted. So because he's white, he's not allowed to talk about people using the word @*#$!? Not only is that racism, it's also just straight assumption on something that has no merit. The Rape, is not referring to sexual assault. It relates to how the music industry rapes us as artists. If you looked up the definition for the word rape, you'd notice there is more than one definition for the word. For example, Rape: Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice. His work is original, creative, and good. He tells it how it is, and it's a slap in the face to all us artists in every musical genre that are trying to create something that is real and an expression of self when you dis someone like Cubbie, who puts his heart and soul into everything he creates. Music is my life and so I take this stuff personally. God, you people make me sick.

awkwards1l3nc3, relax. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't blame you for getting upset when members leave non-thought-out, stupid comments. However, please understand that when an artist, black or white, uses the word 'rape' - regardless of the meaning behind why they used it - there is going to be a reaction. Thanks for becoming a member at DJBooth, we hope to see you around the feedback threads.

I'm relaxed, I'm just expressing my opinion as well. I totally agree with xero on what he said about Kanye West and Lil John. If people are going to make judgements on music, they need to understand it a little bit before hand so they don't make themselves look like fools.

Why do people keep talking about the beat like it's alien weirdness? It's in 4/4 timing. It's whack just because it's not one note on every beat like every mainstream rap song you've ever heard?

I respect rappers like this. They read through the bullshit in the industry. In fact I dnt call them rappers. They are a branch species called LYRICIST s. A starving and forgotten species that are REAL and anxious to take back there rightful place in music. Understanding that music is alive, personalized and relating to every single person in earshot distance. Not Kissin any1's ass, but this kat is Sick! This is the type of music that has you rewind like "What he say!?" Truly potent lyrics, and the editing and voice splicing, simply spectacularly massive. You can tell he truly loves his music if he took the time and energy to produce the song down to the his voice. Shock value is the only way to get attention sometime. (Eminem) So for those who dnt like the "white man" in the "black man's" game sayin "@*#$!", Consider this, The word @*#$! actually means Ignorant. Your forefathers hated the word and now its some how cool to refer to each other as ignorant? I live around racism, and a true racist would not call you a @*#$! to your face ,without back up.(cowardly) If your offended you might want to find out WHY you should be, instead of some urban taboo. (but off the topic) As a LYRICIST myself I eat ppl like this alive, adding to MY HULK. So continue what you do Cubbiebear. I'm jus glad I'm not the only one, but then again how could I be? -Sincerely, NOBODY

The song is tight.
I think Hip hop fans all need to take a deep breath and go listen to something else for a minute. Hip Hop comes from all different people in all different places now adays, and fans who hate more then they like, need to humble out. Another argument where both sides are wrong.... |

True SIKKNESS.. divine chaos. The definition of what hip hop should be. Its no fluke either, I just got put on to this guy and every track i've heard from him is absolute fire... in two-thousand nine, thats hard to say. This song though, im sayin damn.. calculated thoughts, build up, climax.. what more do you want. And actually has somethin to say too. As far as the beat, most modern "musicians" barely pull off stuttering out the words they probably didnt even write, nevertheless make beats as creative as some of the most concise poetic lyrics ive heard. - I signed on this site for this thread alone. Thx for lettin me speak.
