What happens when three highly acclaimed rappers are paired with three of the hottest current producers in hip-hop? You get the Smirnoff Signature Mix Series; a modern day spin on three classic rap songs. Following the release of KRS-ONE and DJ Premier’s Criminal Minded ’08, rapper Common and producer Just Blaze have hooked up for an ’08 rendition of The Light (It’s Love). Originally released in ’00, off Common’s fourth studio album Like Water For Chocolate, The Light finds itself with new lyrics, new accompaniment (Marsha Ambrosius and Bilal), a new baseline and a completely live feel. On March 4, Smirnoff will release Midnight ’08, a collaborative effort between Q-Tip and Cool & Dre.

This is super hot! I'm glad this is a new single being dropped! A good reprise 8 years after the epic original. Common is still reppin for the real words, poetry and hip hop!
Bloody amazing track, Common is truly great (then and now!). Love the feel of the song, fresh twist to something old school. Is that the same Marsha from Floetry? Cause it sounds A LOT like her, and it works so well with this track. Although I'm not a big fan of the whole ad campaign musical collabs, this resultant track was quite a surprise for me (usually the ad campaign tracks are far from stellar).
The original version of "The Light" off "Like Water For Chocolate" is not only one of the greatest hip-hop love songs ever written, but arguable one of the best hip-hop songs period. Personally, it is one of my favorite records of all-time and I really didn't expect the re-make to be this OUT OF THIS WORLD. Common's ability to spit about love has proven to be his greatest subject matter with the right production. Just Blaze, Marsha, and Bilal compliment Common so well that you can't help to have this song on repeat! Wow. Common better include this as a bonus/hidden track on "The Believer." R.I.P. Jay Dee
Common is a paradox: one of those uncommon rappers I can talk about with people that don’t even like hip hop, you know, he makes the finest songs (lyrics), almost anybody can relate to! And then the beat here is amazing, I love how it grabs on 0:32/1:38, and slows down as well. Love the piano, the bass, the guitar, the drums, the violin… how many rap songs are there that you can you even talk about these instruments?! Can’t forget to mention the hook is superbly done. Smirnoff Signature Mix Series is a great initiative, can’t wait for the Q-Tip and Cool & Dre track.
This Beat is a BANGER! Common is PERFECT for this beat by Just Blaze! I am feeling the 70's feel a whole lot! The Chorus is hot. This is classic right here! I am really liking the whole track! Very Well Done!
yall's gonna hate me, but i dont like common-i neva have...ive heard othas who sing this type of rap and i think it's betta...but i wont rate a 1, ill rate a 2 jus so i can say that i think it is just ok.
This is a great addition to The Light series. All three have had amazing production, but have all been very different. The original had a great sample by Bobby Caldwell. I would have to say my favorite was the remix off with Erykah Badu off the Bamboozled soundtrack. The best part of this song are references to rhymes in the original. Common is one of the greatest to ever bless the mic. Pick up his second album Resurrection if you don't already have it and you will understand what I mean. This song is just so damn soulful it can't be considered anything but classic.
Great song...8 years ago. If everyone wanted to re-do their best songs then everyone would like those also. I mean this is decent, but not very original if you ask me. But I will admit common is one of the best out their lyrically.
wow...makes me wanna go watch brown sugar...common, lupe, sometimes most def, floetry, jill scott...those are true hip hop artists that put love in a track..not just a bangin beat and a catchy saying...real talk
This is the reason I like common. He doesn't have to rap about drugs, sex, gangs ,or stuff like that to get recognition he can just be himself and still make a good track.
This some of dat grown folk muzik right here. Common is just killin it right now . Common can be in the argument for greatest lyricist out there. Overall great song
I won't discuss about the fact that this is original and well done (for what I understand about hip hop, I started to listen to it not such a long time ago), but it's just not my type of song...it's ok anyway! Sorry for bringing down the ratin :(
I dont blame ya pattypatty.. But this Is Real Hip Hop! But then again, its about mood swings too isnt it???..
Common rejuvenated, and delivers like Fed Ex..POW!
lol
