Common - Summer Madness
Artist: Common
Featuring: Cocaine 80s
Producer: No I.D.
Album: The Pursuit EP
Label: Think Common Music Inc./Warner Bros.
When it rains, it pours—or, as the case may be, when it snows it blizzards. Relatively quiet since the release of 2008’s Universal Mind Control LP, Common made his return to the hip-hop blogosphere yesterday with the totally unexpected arrival of a collaborative EP with Cocaine 80s—a collective made up of Common, No. I.D., Steve Wyreman, Rob Kinelski, Kevin Randolph, James Fauntleroy, Makeba and more. (Shouts to Andrew of FakeShore for the scoop!) As a taste of the dopeness in store, we present Summer Madness, a lush selection which finds I.D. flipping a lush guitar-organ sample as the “conscious-rap” vet delivers more of the clear-sighted lyrical poetry fans have come to know and love. In vivid bars, the rhymesayer mixes personal reflections with lucid commentary on the social roots of inner-city crime: “Shortys bear arms ‘cause don’t nobody reach out, young frames leak out, aunties freak out.” Like a certain white powder, this mellow, thought-provoking banger is practically guaranteed to leave listeners wanting more. Fortunately, you can get your fix free of charge; fans can download The Pursuit in exchange for nothing more than a promo tweet here.

Common is one of my favorite rappers. He is one of the most socially conscience rappers in the game. No I.D. always does a good job. Can't wait for the album.

My power is out thanks to some not-so-awesome storms in Chicago. So, tonight you all just get my rating - I hope it speaks for itself.

Love Common. He kills pretty much every track he raps on. No I.D. definitely made it better.
