If you’ve found yourself lacking motivation and energy at the gym lately (and no, I’m not pushing ‘roids), it might be time to update your workout playlist. Along with the obligatory Rocky theme and Jock Jams, you may want to include Common Market‘s new track, Gol’ Dust. The Seattle duo, composed of producer Sabzi and emcee RA Scion, creates up-tempo, energetic hip hop that is guaranteed to add a few plates to your lifts. Sabzi’s horn-driven beat evokes a training montage from an ‘80s movie, while Scion’s hyperactive delivery squeezes that much more gusto into the track. As an added bonus, his lyrics are actually quite thought-provoking, covering religion, personal ambitions, and more. Gol’ Dust will appear on Common Market’s second album, Tobacco Road, out September 9.

Common Market does a great job making a conscious banger- a hard thing to do. Great production

Hah, I don't think this would come close to my workout playlist. You gotta get some DMX and some Eminem on there to really get your swell on at the gym LOL! This song is pretty weak to me, it almost sounds more of like a punk rock band that's just kind of rapping on a track to generate some buzz. Can't really give much props to the production either, but thats just me.

I second what XuUP17 has said. This is a refreshing new sound and overall a very impressive record. Don't sleep on these guys.

This production is real hot. DJ Sabzi went epic on this. I like dude's vocal presence. The hook keeps my head bobbing. This track is a definite conscious banger. Delivery is non-stop confidence. This bangs for us intellectuals. I like this a lot. This sounds like a joint Talib Kweli would hop on. I bet if he had of made this track, it would have received a lot more high reviews.

I saw Sabzi playing around with this beat on an old crossfader "interview" and have been wondering whether this beat was gonna go to Geo (Blue Scholars) or RA Scion (Common Market) - check it out on youtube, if you don't think Sabzi has skills producing he lays one of the sickest synth riffs i've ever heard. straight fire.

Feelin' it or not, one must break down the elements:
The beat is dope, sick, indeed! From the sound and weight of the kicks and snares... the horns. It simply rolls. The rhymes?! c'mon the rhyme schemes up in this joint's simply ridiculous matched by flawless delivery. The attitude and confidence of Ra Scion is stunning, as is his breath control would make KRS proud - no doubt about it. The only potential flaw - and one which cannot be held against the artisans is that the lyrical content is so deep and eloquent that perhaps it loses some of its accessibility. Problem is, if he dumbed it down folks would frown on that too. This is bangin' without a dictionary and with one it may be educational too. elements broken down... Feelin' it. |
