Common‘s eighth studio album, Universal Mind Control, has officially hit store shelves.  Though his new style of hip hop has left some critics (including both of his hometown newspapers, the Tribune and the Sun-Times) unimpressed, the Booth is withholding judgment until Wednesday, when our very own Nathan S. will offer his take.  In the meantime, we present a previously unreleased remix of the album’s second track, Punch Drunk Love.  While all three original verses are retained, Kanye West‘s guest hook is redone by Common, and The Neptunes replace the original’s chaotic beat with a more laid-back production that includes background vocals from Pharrell.  For those whose ears can easily adapt, roll it over to your local record store or online retailer and pick up your own copy of Universal Mind Control.

Say whatever you want about Common's new album "Universal Mind Control"...I rock with it. "Punch Drunk Love" is definitely one of my favorites and the remix is just as addicting. I like how The Neptunes brought down the track's breezy melody to a loosened up vibe perfect for any lounge DJ set. Pharrell and Chad have been killing the keyboards on their recent productions and I'm loving it. I know their hailed for their unparalleled drum patterns and synthesizers but wow!

This is a much better song then the original, the beat is head over heels better then the original & suits Common style more then the original. Would of loved to of heard Kanye on this beat. Not really looking forward to Universal Mind Control, None of the beats produced from The Neptunes (that ive heard) have really fitted in well with Commons flow & lyrics, which is a shame as i had high hopes when i first heard of the project. 3.5

Oh DAYUMN, this is going to be my new song!!! Right when that CLASSIC, back to the basics Neptunes beat hit I was instantly feelin it! This track makes you FEEL it, from the way you can vibe to that beat and that catchy flow. The lyrics are pure P.I.M.P and definitely bring out the best of Common. My head can't stop boppin to this beat, even though the song just ended LOL. Classic ish right here!

Damn Common doing his thing. The production is great. Commom doing that story like he usually do. Great song all the elements come together to make this a classic. You can't help but bob your head to the music and OH did I just hear my Initials TKO!! haha And no you will not find out my last name. You will know me as Tanner Kaelyn which is my first and middle name. Last name will always be a mystery. The day common's new album is available I'm going to buy it. Pharrel did his thing to. If you really like Pharrel check out his new Ice Cream clothing fashion out for the winter.

I've been saying this for years.

COMMON GETS YOUNGER AS THE YEARS GO BY

It seems to me like he used to be this mature guy and i also always feel like he's been the same age forever. His newer songs are a lot more immature than usual.

Better than the album version.

Overall, though, disappointing. I feel like Common was capable of much more on this new album. But, before I get into that, I will save my comments and leave them under Nathan's feature review on Wednesday.

This record was my favorite on the new album. (EXPECT A FULL REVIEW OF THE ALBUM FROM ME SOON HERE). I miss the Kanye hook though. But this is just a smoother, laid back feeling. Anybody saying Common is getting more immature or something obviously aren't real Common fans. This is classic Common if anything. Listen to ALL his music. He gets his women woo on with a lot of joints. This is still so much better than regular "girl" songs. Get with it.

I love this remix. The original was so so to me. But this? Top notch. I just bought that Common album and that Musiq Soulchild. I haven't cracked that common open yet? But I can say that Musiq'a album sounds good so far. Better than his last. (Sorry for hoppin off topic. Much respect to one of my favorite MC's Common Sense. Please say the Sense.

This remix is great. I like it alot more than the original actually. Im not really feeling this album though TBH. I agree with the comment made earlier about Common losing maturity, this isnt the Common Sense on tracks like I Used to Love H.E.R and The Corner. Seems to me he went from deep soulful rhymes that made me go "Damn" when I heard them, to almost some middle school ryhmes. Its ok Common, I still love you. XD

As a black woman who had up until recently a great deal of respect for Common,Im dissapointed with Common for this track. Hes usually positive and I feel this type of music is beneath him and a contradiction of his past work. Plus it wasnt that great. I wish more artist would make music that is meaningful, something that our youth can use to navigate life in a positive and productive way. Stop promoting sex, degradation of woman and violence and over all being a thug. We have a black president finally! We have something positive to give our youth we need to filter out the negativity that is being pumped into there heads.

lzfreshtadeth I am in total agreement with you. When I heard the track I was like what the ... is this? This screams midlife crisis to me, but because I normally have a great deal of respect for Common Im going to give him a break and give him the benefit of doubt by saying maybe the brother had to compromise some of his personal ethics for some real recognition. In the past Common has not fully received the recognition that he should have because he's tried to be a little more tateful and classy than a lot of rappers and based on what most of you thought of this song it goes to show that the trashier you are the more albums you can sale. Quite frankly I was looking forward to purchasing this album but now I dont know if my heart can handle the dissapointment if the other songs are anything like this one!
