Cobe Obeah - Director's Cut
Artist: Cobe Obeah
Producer: Argonauts
Album: Song of the Starz
Label: Unsigned
Do you ever just zone out? You know, just sit back and relax as your mind drifts. If so, then you probably know that there is music specifically built for these “zone-out” moments. After a few thorough listens and a quick re-evaluation of my life (oh yeah it’s that good), I can officially dub Cobe Obeah’s Director’s Cut one of those songs. Grabbing an Argonauts instrumental (that actually sounds like something off of Eminem’s Encore LP) by the horns, the Los Angeles native admirably rides the beat with the strength of a gladiator. Cobe Obeah uses an even tone of voice to craft a song that has more Vibe than the magazine and showcases his lyrical prowess with lyrics like “I’m Malcolm X teaching calculus, an alchemist/ that’s ‘bout to give you the wildest sh*t/ mix it up, mix it up, overdose it/ I’ll give you the potion, I’m pouring out my emotions.” If you’re digging this, then be sure to vibe out to Cobe’s Song of the Starz mixtape when it comes out on May 28th.

This is some ill shit. The Argonauts did their thang on this beat and it gets me going for sure. It builds up to his lyrically talented flow as he murks it throughout the whole track. The only thing I would have wished is that the speech sample should have been left out...but damn I need to hear some more from Cobe!

one thing i ave noticed on dj-booth is that many artist and producers have stepped up their beat game and this is just a continuous of that im really into this a lot.
i like the break in the middle where the chorus and sample is the main focus thats way nice a touch then instantly his flow follows through to make this song epic. haha funny how they got that ending sample to follow through with the lines at the end all in all a deep song with an emotional background 4 spins this is banger but its missing something for me to give it a classic star |

This is great! I can see it being the backdrop for an epic-feeling NBA commercial.
My only problem with it is that it seems to be on the verge of a climax the whole way through, but never reaches it. It's like you're waiting for something to explode but it just gets hotter and hotter...and ends. Aside from that, I'm not complaining (though I think I did enough of it already). |

Everything just works really well here. Which is great news, considering many emcees would have found a way to mess up the dope production work of the Argonauts.
And have no fear... you'll be able to hear more of Cobe asap (his Booth freestyle drops next week!) |

i really like the beat and dude can rap, but something didnt quite hit me enough to want to listen to it again and again. it almost sounds like the whole track is in introduction mode, at least the way he sounds. maybe needs to grow on me

Damn, that production is @*#$! sick! I was really feeling Song of the Starz so it's good to see that he was able to follow that up with this. Shows consistency which is kind of less abundant these days with most artists coming out.
The hook on this was something I wasn't expecting, but Cobe does this track justice regardless. Only thing I wasn't feeling was how the song ended. His verses were on point and I'm happy to say that I'm looking forward to his mix tape release. This is a Banger. |

What really sold me on this track was the power of his lyrics. I can't agree more with the "zoning out" comment.
And you can't ignore the other undeniable qualities that Cobe displayed here. The beat was on the mark, everything was right where it needed to be. Besides that, I agree with Matthew Kyle, the song never really reaches the climax that it seems to be building up for. But all in all, Cobe obviously has a lot of talent, and he showed it right here. |

Good lyricism from Cobe, but the production undeniably steals the show. However, I do agree with Matthew Kyle in the point that the production never quite reaches it's breaking point.

Damn that beat is awesome! The dude has a really good flow, but what really makes this song is the quality of it's production. Definitely looking forward to that freestyle @DJ Z.

I was waiting for the Nas One Mic slow build of energy but it never came...instead I got a preacher and rapper turned into singer. Overall Cobe delivered something worth listening to. He has a few powerful lines making Director's Cut way more than just a few catchy metaphors over a mellow beat. The line that hit the most.. "And Jesus never answered my prayers/So I only believe in momma because she is my creator."

Knew I was gonna like it by the time the intro ended. Love how he started with a short verse before the whole beat came in. Don't like the guy yelling towards the end of the track but I'll let it slide.

i think the anit-climaxing beat adds a whole new dimension to the song, one that makes it more intriguing and satisfying when you finish listening. cobe certainly knows what he is on about. banger for sure

The song starts off nicely, and carries that way up until the end, the production was banging, the lyrics were ill, the only problem i have with Cobe is he sounds quiet at times, and he has to put in more emotions, other than that this track bangs, oh and btw is this the same Kobe that sang on some of Bun b's songs, and that detox reference track, this is detox.

A-Yo! What happened to my earlier comment ??
The joint's intriguingly dark atmospheric sound feels like a natural extension of those making it, rather than a put-on. A great example of confident approach to thoughtful emceeing and powerful production. Not only was he streetwise, but you could easily find some positive and powerful message inside those rhymes. Between this and his past feature, Cobe Obeah is off to a strong start and should turn some heads with his mixtape. My Pick for Track of the Day. |

Drops some serious lit on this track, the production is decent, I don't know why but it kind of drains his juice toward the end, I would have liked to hear him sit on top of hit more but all around serious skills on the canvas here

This beat is off the hook and has such a great entry. The lyrics on this song are tight. The end of the song is where my zoning out occurs because he needs a better hook coming in. He kills it in all 3 verses though. Great production.

"...And Hey-soos (Jesus) never answered my prayers/so I only believe in mama 'cause she is my creator/save us..." Damn. One of my favorite things to do when listening to a track is pick out bars that (I feel) most people would overlook.
Aside from the phenomenal, epic and emotional production from the Argonauts, Cobe seamlessly spit his lines throughout the beat. I felt like I watching a Director's sample reel, and Cobe was narrating the entire thing. The chorus at the end coulda been a little better, but that's about all I can critique. 4.5 |

The beat is really intense. I'm loving the production. I can see someone jogging like Rocky up some steps getting ready for a fight in the video. This is probably one better songs I've heard in a while. The beat kinda sounds as if its building to a climax, that it doesn't quite hit but it doesn't matter because its still off the charts.

Excellent intro, getting me pumped up for the rest of the song. I can definitely tell it is going to be a word driven track.
This is the type of song I can see someone listening to right before they go do something big. Maybe a kid listening to it before they play in a basketball game, has the ability to get you amped up without over doing it. Some songs get you so jacked up that you are actually tired by the end of it, this almost has the ability to keep your heart rate low but make you get motivated at the same time, very hard to do. Cobe does a great job of flowing over the track. He keeps in perfect harmony with the beat and adds to the feel of the song. The lyrics have feeling in them and gives it that extra edge. Between the production and Cobe's word play this song definitely is something special. Looking forward to hear more from him. |

This screams epic from the start! Those drums and repeating sound in the background are sick!
Cobe did a good job not being overshadowed by this orchestration worthy of a beat, even though the flow was a little monotone, but the cadence made up for it. Some nice lines here and there, but not the reason why I'll listen to this again really. |

i agree with alot of ppl who have commented that the beat seems to be leading up to something but never really reaches there. like there was a point where the beat changed and got a little more intense but it was only for a short bit and really not that in your face. lyrics wise this guy is pretty strong, the beats and the lyrics worked on this song, it was good but there is still room for improvement here

How appropriate that the sound has an epic feel to it in accordance with the title, "Director's Cut."
It feels very complete, like an end credit song that wraps up a finely directed film. There is definitely a sense of immense, colossal passion. Wanting something so badly that nothing will stop you. And I think when the sound of the song can accomplish that foundation, what follows is a exquisite display of craftsmanship. His delivery was on point, lyrics brought an inspirational vibe, and execution was dead on. I agree with someone that said that the vocal could use more emotion. He did sound a bit monotone to be honest. The song is dope. |

I had to comment again just to say I love the way he flipped that tupac line from Keep Ya Head Up.
