Clinton Sparks - Favorite DJ
Artist: Clinton Sparks
Producer: Clinton Sparks
Album: The Brighter Side of Dark
Label: Photo Finish/Island Def Jam Records
Shade 45 DJ Clinton Sparks always seems to have his name in the spotlight, whether it be his beats, the 838,439,489 (actual number) of mixtapes he’s done, or his frequent appearances on your television. Now, with the help of Jermaine Dupri and DJ Class, Clinton Sparks drops his new track Favorite DJ, off his currently unscheduled new album The Brighter Side of Dark. Produced by Sparks himself, astute listeners may recognize the Baltimore club music rhythm that made DJ Class a household name with his single I’m the Ish. Vocally, Class’ auto-tuned verse sounds pretty much like your standard DJ Class verse, followed closely by JD, who gives us a 16 bar effort that’s not spectacular, but is enough to keep the flow going. Throw in some repetitive hooks and your standard “Simon Says” from the DJ, and I’m not sure Sparks will succeed in his mission to have Favorite DJ played in clubs and house parties everywhere. But what do the DJs in the DJBooth think? Are you ready to claim this track as your new anthem, or has it fallen short…like JD?

Okay, here is the deal: There is only one place you can truly enjoy this song and (unfortunately) it isn't online at DJBooth.net; its in the club. While I have not heard this in the club (yet), I can only imagine that if it makes the same impact DJ Class' previous single made it will be a hit.
Its catchy, it moves comfortably, and vocally its right on point (JD's dumb down lyrics are what you expect from a club record). Clinton is an amazing DJ, but nobody ever talks about his production work. If this pops, I think that could change. |

I'd rate 2 stars, but im sure this would be a banger in the club as DJ Z says, so ill go rotation.

Production is the centerpiece here. On my computer speakers it does not sound impressive but I am sure in my car or in a club it will bang. Clinton Sparks is one of those producers that I have come to respect so much with every new song he puts out.
Definitely a song that will make people move it. This is easily going into my next set so hopefully people will respond to it the way I am. JD adds something...not sure what but it really is all backseat to the production. DJ Class does put a solid effort on the track and outshines JD. 3 1/2 stars. |

Production is fire but that's about it... Agreed, better suited to be heard in the club.

No! I am getting tired of hearing records like this. Whoever was on the first verse destroyed this track single-handedly with that auto tune. Hook was just as bad as the first verse. Jermaine Dupri, where the @*#$! have you been? Whatever the case may be, he really didn't add anything extra IMO.
While this track fails on the verses and on the hook alone, the production carries it and will more than likely be the reason this track receives acclaim from the club scene. This just wasn't my type of song. Lacks creativity and is pretty reminiscent of all those other party songs I hear on the radio. 1.5 |

Very forgettable, production is the highlight as others have mentioned. Jermaine came out of left field on this track.

A much bigger bigger fan of Sparks' I'm the ish. I find his almost screaming at the end of the track and not really producing a track that's worthy of any home besides in a club. Perhaps Sparks' too much a DJ because this track sounds like he threw on a song and the JD crawls out of a hole with a mic and attempts to do something with the attention and then Sparks' just says eff it and screams over what remains of the instrumental.

Yep, its for the clubs. An opportunity to make a bathroom break or get some new drinks cos this ain't movin' me.
It sounds like a first draft of "Kiss Her." 1.5 |

Don't want to pile on, so let's just leave it at "I'll wait for my final verdict until I hear it in the clubs, but for now..."

wow, didn't set my expectations too high with the 2 star rating. But I can listen to this outside of a club setting. I'll throw it into rotation.

At home this is a 2. In the clubs, its a 5. The production is nice. There wasn't really anything special about the lyrics.

Its your typical club joint, nothing special (running theme) and its just simple, I can't even say basic. Just like it didn't take much energy to produce, I'm walking way.

Rough crowd. I'm telling you, guys - wait until you hear it in the club. I think you'll find it to be a bit more enjoyable. Computer speakers just don't do the trick sometimes.

hey this beat sounded incredible through my headphones... maybe it only sounds good through crappy headphones?? just a theory guys haha. i think @Z said it right- "JD's dumb down lyrics are what you expect from a club record" you dont want anything lyrically amazing for this type of beat, you want something everybody can sing (or try to) along to with a few too many drinks inside of em and shake it like there's no tomorrow! this track achieves that i believe. certified banger

The beat was definitely good, but I didn't feel like I got the whole experience from listening with my earphones.
