Chris Webby - Can't Deny Me
Artist: Chris Webby
Producer: Statik Selektah
Album: Best in the Burbs
Label: Unsigned
You could hate on Chris Webby, but what good would it do? Anyone with ears can hear that the Connecticut buzzmaker’s got skills; if his stellar Booth résumé to date has somehow failed to convince you that his mic-rocking abilities are beyond reproach, though, his latest offering should drive the point home. The final leak off Webby’s forthcoming full-length, Can’t Deny Me finds Boston heavyweight Statik Selektah flipping a sample from Hova‘s I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) into a head-nodding, organ-led instrumental as the freestyle series alum gives a full demonstration of his lyrical prowess. Unsurprisingly, he comes fast and furious with the similes, showcasing his expertise in the fields of astronomy (“Got ‘em seein’ stars like Galileo and Copernicus”), mythology (“Clashin’ with the motherf*ckin titans like Perseus…”) and… scatology (“I’m runnin’ sh*t like Mr. Hanky on a treadmill.”). Oh, and he rhymes the “Perseus” line with “perky tits” – how great is that? If Chris Webby’s won you over with his latest banger, there’s plenty more where this come from on Best in the Burbs, released today and out now online.

Listenin to Chris Webby is always a treat. He takes me down through memory lane with all his 90's references, uses clever wordplay and is really clever with metaphors. This is another banger for him.

The vocab and intonation are there and the similes are tight, but he rhymes also primarily in simile... change it up a little and use some inside phrase rhymes to tighten it up and I would have given it a four. Using a Hova sample, I think that could have been incorporated thicker by Statik as well. Nonetheless, I'm feelin it.

I dont like the begining... it starts of a lil to sudden for me... But he did go in pretty good on his intro verse. He has some very nice lyrics, that you have to second think alot to understand what he ment (just like Wezzy). I like this from Chris. Its a vnice, solid record for his album. And i really like the production from Statik. Statik always has great production work. I cant help but rate this a 4.

I can't help but think that this Statik production would have been far more powerful in the hands of another, more skilled emcee. Webby just spits, but he doesn't take it to another level.

@ Homeless C
Just in-case anyone is reading this crap who hasn't listened to all of Webby's goodness, he doesn't pretend to be anything he isn't. Everything Homeless C said about him was true, accept being fake. He's never denied he went to private school, or that he attended Hofstra. As a matter of fact that's exactly what he raps about, that and having grown up with the same entertainment mediums as the rest of us. I for one can't get enough of his music, I love his flow and I'm addicted to the nostalgia mind @*#$! he hits me with as TV show references and video game metaphors spew uncontrollably from his lyrical genius. |
