Chris Mathien - The Definition
Artist: Chris Mathien
Producer: Chris Mathien
Album: Promo Single
Label: Midwest Music Group
What is the sound of one hand clapping? When a tree falls in the forest and no one’s around to hear it, does it make a sound? Precisely what type of artist is Chris Mathien, the mysterious hookman readers may remember from Windy City emcee R.O.E.‘s first feature, The Gloves (No Quit)? On new promo single The Definition (Mathien’s Booth debut as a headliner), the singer/songwriter/producer admits that not even he knows the answer to that last brain-teaser, but concludes, “I don’t want to be no one else but who you don’t expect me to be.” Whatever you want to call Mathien, he can certainly write a catchy tune – the artist’s laid-back, piano-led boardwork and off-the-cuff vocal presence add up to a sunny soul/pop/alternative joint sure to win him fans among our musically open-minded readership. Definition‘s not slated to be included on any forthcoming project, but those who like what they’re hearing can keep it locked to our frontpage for more pleasant surprises from this promising up-and-comer.

I have no idea how to categorize this record, nor Chris as an artist, but who cares. He'd just break out of that box anyways... this is full of soul and hits your ear buds with a smile.

I know he "defy's category", and that's true, but he definitely sounds like someone to me, I just can't place it....wait....Citizen Cope! The style's in the same ballpark, but their voices really sound alike. Anyone else know them some Citizen Cope? If you don't you basically do now after listening to this.
Long story short, I really like this, but I knew it sounded like someone else. |

He isn't the greatest singer, but he has plenty of soul in his vocals. He also knows how to make a catchy melody, and did nicely on the boards as well.

"white dude singing like a black dude looking like a nerd"???? Huh, now u gotta realize there are white R&B male singers that are good, but Chris just seems confused about what he wants to be...or what this track wants to be..
