This weekend, my girl Erykah Badu (@fatbellybella) went on a Twitter diatribe about r&b and hip-hop artists “standing by and letting the music turn into this pop techno cornball music.” While I’ve shared this sentiment for a while, I did feel like things were improving. I must say, however, that when I heard Chris Brown’s new single, Yeah 3X, I had the urge to walk bucked-naked through Dealey Plaza in protest alongside my sista. Don’t misunderstand, the track isn’t bad technically speaking. Brown’s voice soars over the DJ Frank E-produced synth heavy track, and it definitely has the pop appeal to welcome him back into mainstream America’s speakers, but come on. Didn’t Usher, Jason Derulo, Kelly Rowland and everyone who’s worked with David Guetta just release some slight variation of this song? I get it, it’s the hot style of the moment, but I just need a break. Then again, it’s all a matter of taste, so let me have it if you think this is the best thing since the strobe light. You can already tell Brown’s unscheduled new album F.A.M.E. (Forgiving All My Enemies) will be controversial. Let the debate begin.

This song first appeared on the Top Hip Hop / R&B Chart on November 8, 2010

Will fit in nicely with the rest of the club-centric records that Jessica listed above. Personally, I think Chris is at his best vocally when he appeals more to his R&B side (over his pop counterpart), but when you have production like this is anyone actually listening to the words?

hmm i honestly just think of this a song to groove to and catchy and that just makes it more popular because it is "the hot style of the moment."

Can't deny the goal of this record to sell albums and bring him back to Top40 pop. This will easily bring him back there, so for that the track gets a high rating from me. Chris is aiming for radio and clubs with this one, not to satisfy my personal preference while I'm driving in my car or vibing out with the ipod. Gotta give credit where it is due. Easy 4 star.

This is a cool dance record, but not my kind of track, so I can't even put it in my rotation unfortunately. It's OK... Still a good voice at least.

The thing is this track is very average compared to 'Dynamite', 'DJ Falling In Love' and all the rest of those similar sounding records. 'Dueces' was awesome, this is okay but I don't think it will have the same impact. As a fan of Calvin Harris 'I'm Not Alone' record, (which Yeah 3x's synth riff is obviously from) i would much rather just play that song than this. Better luck on the next single CB!

very cornball, but to stay in the game you gotta either fight the wave or go along with it. Seems like we're back to the techno arena music. I'll pass

Great production work from Frank E and Chris does what he needs to to give this club and radio credibility... Face it, a lot of people have lost respect for Chris so even a solid R&B ballad like 'Crawl' didn't see him climbing the charts... This will

While I'm not the biggest fan of club beats ruling the Hot 100, it really doesn't bother me all that much either. I have always liked Chris and this track doesn't change that. And just remember that Chris was the start of it all back in 2008 with "Forever". This track isn't that different.

I love dance music and Chris but this isn't the best example of it. The lyrics are forgettable at best. I guess if you're at the club and really drunk, you will be feeling the yeah, yeah, yeah, but right now, its Tuesday and I'm at my desk, so I don't feel it.

I get what ppl are saying, why wouldn't he want to get back in w/ the pop crowd that went astray? I did say that the song itself as a pop record does what it's supposed to do: the beat catches your ear, i like his voice, and it'll get burn. All that being said, the shit is forgettable and I just don't think this cookie cutter, generic, any body can sing it type of song should be the only option for getting on the charts.

Did anyone think of Calvin Harris' "I'm Not Alone" and that other Dance Club song "Can You Feel It In The Air" (can't remember the artist) when the synths went off?
I'm into Dance/House music but this had an overwhelming taste of "cheese" in it. Yeah it'll appeal teens and MTV which is the market CB is always aiming for. But imo, "Deuces" over "Yeah 3x" anyday!

Well since techno is the most popular music world-wide i cant understand why everyone is sayin this is jus a phase. Maybe people here are finally catchin on to what the rest of the world listens to. With that said give me some X and some glow sticks and ill put on a beast of a light show.

Certainly a step in the wrong direction after "Deuces", as once again he succumbs to the trendy big synth sound of today's dance music scene.

Lyrics are so derivative that I can't believe there were actual songwriters involved. Derivative but I guess functional, which is no surprise considering how perfectly tailored it is to the demands of the club/radio format.

Listenable, but I never see myself listening to it because I "want" to... 1.5

CB my homie and everything but REALLY? When he came in the game he at least brought some uniqueness to R&B/Pop game. Cats were saying they wanted to get to the level Chris Brown is at. But now he is following there lead. Come on Chris you're better than that.
