It’s been over a year since Chino XL stepped into the Booth with his first (and, to date. only) solo feature, the Bun-B assisted Cross Your Heart... so, does that mean he’s fallen off? Nahhh! As evidenced by the newly-released lead single off his forthcoming RICANstruction LP, the rapper’s still very much on his grind, and his lyrical skills have only grown sharper in his time away from our frontpage. Chino kicks things off with the claim that no one in the game thinks quite like him, and proceeds to prove that assertion many times over; after hearing him spit more punchlines in three verses than some rappers do in an entire album, I can only conclude that his internal monologue consists of an endless series of on-point puns—it would be easier to quote a line that isn’t a wordplay-driven/allusive wisecrack than to decide on one standout bon mot. Backed by Focus’ ominous, baroque harpsichord arpeggios, this cut is a shoo-in for repeat spins among our resident lyrical heads. For more hot beats and knotty wordplay, grab a copy of XL’s latest full-length when it drops this February.

This sounds a little amateur, but not bad. Production was decent but Chino didn't bring as good of a flow on here as I was thinking.

Chino XL is on that proverbial "most slept-on emcees of all-time" list. The punchlines are endless and the flow is rapidfire. Looking forward to the new project.

Whoa!! Focus servin up some variety on booth today. Lyrically, What do you expect? it’s Chino, he doesn’t write punchlines, he writes punch rhymes. Spittin quotables every time line for line. Even though the song is lyrically as hard as they come, its basically nothing but other than "why Chino XL is a better rapper than you" track .... Still, It's definitely worth a listen based on lyrics alone. Though, I can't imagine a youngster today listening to this and paying attention for full length of the track ... 3.5

Yeah, I totally agree with DJ Mixtape Assassin. Chino XL is the definition of a beast. He is lyrically one of the top emcees. Always been slept-on, but his level of lyrical skill cannot at all be denied. Once I saw the Booth was featuring this song I automatically knew it would be nothing but pure fire.
The beat from Focus fit perfectly. It sounded like some kind of creepy haunted mansion / Halloween type of music. |
