Chali 2na - Step Yo Game Up
Artist: Chali 2na
Producer: Scott Storch
Album: Fish Market Series (Vol. 2)
Label: Decon
There’s no shortage of people who need to step their game up right now (I’m looking at you guys fixing the Lousiana oil spill), and former Jurassic 5/Ozomatli frontman and recent Decon Records signee Chali 2na, who made his Booth debut a year ago with the Kweli-assisted Lock S**t Down, has no problem telling them so on his new leak Step Yo Game Up. Production wise Scott Storch, who’s slowly beginning to put together a comeback of sorts, delivers an engaging if not particularly remarkable beat, but with a voice like Chali’s it almost doesn’t matter. While his baritone delivery, as always, takes center stage, it’s Chali’s cadence and flow that truly prove yet again what an elite emcee Chali is, although I’m sure there will be no shortage of naysayers waiting to, well, naysay. We’ll separate the supporters from the detractors soon. For more hip-hop rich in Omega 3s, be sure to cop Chali’s Fish Market Series (Vol. 2) mixtape, set to hit dry land on June 8.

Chali has one of the best vocals in the game. In fact, I am surprised he hasn't landed a few voice over gigs and pushed Morgan Freeman and Michael Clarke Duncan out of some work. The Storch production is a nice change of pace from his older, repetitious offerings and start to finish I'm engaged in the record.

One of Storch's lesser beats is still better than 1/2 the stuff out there although he's obviously fallen off... I'm diggin' this!

Those who know Chali from his J5 and Ozomatli days will probably rate this more highly than those who are hearing him for the first time, but personally speaking I feel like he's got one of the best voices, and flows, in the game. Unfortunately his verses and the Storch beat don't work all that well together, they feel parallel, but I'm still digging it. Three stars!

Chali 2na you should "Step Yo Game Up." This wasn't a horrible track by any means, but it seems forced. Storch's production could use some work as well. Really lacks that energetic spark that he has been known for in the past.
Couple of things that really threw me off though were his verses, which were actually very consistent and are clear and obvious proof that there is some talent. The breakdown on the end of the song was pretty cool. 2.5 |

Love this dudes vocals. It's got ok production behind this and dude spits hard. I feel it needs another artist to compliment him, not really feeling him and his solo work.

Haha yeah agree with Z but he sorta sounds comical like E-40 and his cartoon voice. Didnt like the beat at all.

Not my favorite Chali, but he's still one of the best out there. I guess the "way he's pronouncing his words" that The5JAY13 is referring to is that he pronounces his words in a "way" that you can understand what he's saying. And it is possible to use "lol" too much bro.....lol.

Dope beat! Got that 'drama' element.. serious business..Big up Mr. Storch! Chali2na lyrics.. what can I say.. "Over the bass and the treble clef, hot like we hit you in the face wit tha devil's breath.." Naysayers need a serious head check.
