Cee-Lo Green - Old Fashioned
Artist: Cee-Lo Green
Producer: Alan Nglish, Co-Prod. Salaam Remi
Album: The Lady Killer
Label: Elektra/RRP
If I could have one wish (shout out to Ray J), I’d ask for a powder blue ’65 Chevy Malibu with Rosa Acosta riding shotgun. But if I could have two wishes, I’d also ask for Cee-Lo Green to start rapping again. Since it looks like neither of those wishes are going to come true, I guess I’ll just have to be happy with beautiful music like Lo’s new single Old Fashioned. True to its name, Old Fashioned takes a page out of the Raphael Saadiq playbook and reaches back to some truly classic soul sounds, giving the Gnarls Barkley founder a string-laced, slowly walking beat to croon over, complete with back-up vocals from the Lo-Ettes. (Ok, I made that up, but it should definitely be the name of Cee-Lo’s back-up singers.) As much as I want to hear some rap, I can’t front, the man can sing an absolutely gorgeous song. Damnit. To capitalize on the surprise success of Green’s previous single, F**k You, his upcoming album The Lady Killer has been pushed up from December to November 9. Ladies, consider yourselves warned.

While I too miss the Cee-Lo Green of Goodie Mob (I hear you, Nathan), there is no denying that the man is in a rarefied musical air these days. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is capable of doing what Cee-Lo has done here and come across as authentic. Seriously, think about it, I'll give you a minute.
OK, done thinking? Right back where you started, huh? With Cee-Lo. This new album is shaping up to be both Grammy-worthy and one of the year's best. |

This just moved up on my list of most anticipated for the year. Wow. Not since Raphael, as Nathan mentioned, has anything sounded like this. Now I'm only 19, and I haven't delved deep enough into hip-hop to listen to Goodie Mob....yet. Yes I know shoot me now. So with that said, I obviously have no problem with him singing....haha

I had to comment again. Sheesh, this is that ish. I feel like gettin in my time machine Chevy and pullin into a drive up restaurant from 50's, order a milkshake and stare at groups of girls walkin by in tennis skirts. My how the world has changed. Thank you Cee Lo for this one.

This is SICK REAL music right here. I am liking this version of Cee Lo better than any other version. But at the end of the day, they are all one in the same. Dude has some SERIOUS range. Did you ever see him sing Darling Nikki with the Foo Fighters? Search on youtube...Its priceless, just like this! This is smooth.

Not giving a classic by today's standards (positive thing), but back in the Motown days this still would've been fire. Just soul at it's best.

Cee-Lo is killing it right now. His vocals are on point. Almost make you forget that he was rapping with Goodie Mob. I love the old school sound he is going with too. This is truly beautiful music.

Cee-Lo is really a master of creating a music that lifts you up. But this track is lacking something. The "F you" was better.
