Cali Swag District - Where You Are
Artist: Cali Swag District
Producer: Sanchez [for NYLA Production]
Album: The Kickback
Label: Capitol Records
Cali Swag District has released one official single, and that single, Teach Me How to Dougie, has become a huge, huge hit. Huge. Did I mention huge? So naturally, all eyes and ears are on the California quartet, waiting to see if they can deliver another smash with their second single Where You Are. Wisely, Cali Swag aim the new effort at teenage girls, a demographic guaranteed to give you a hit, if you can please them. On the production tip Sanchez [for NYLA Production] builds the song’s hip-hop foundation on a vocal sample from another former teen heaththrob, Michael Jackson, giving District members Jay Are, C Smoove, Yung and MBone a sugary sweet sonic backdrop to lyrically profess their desire to, well, be in close proximity to a certain lovely lady. The result is a light, breezy cut I find hard to believe will achieve the same success as Dougie, but lord knows I’ve been wrong before. We’ll know for sure if Cali Swag is here to stay when their debut album The Kickback drops October 12.

Not bad. Wont be a hit. But a good filler. Something about it just isn't there.

The fact that they got the clearance to use this simple says one of two things: The Jackson estate is looking for cash wherever they can get it at OR whoever owns the rights to the original MJ record actually likes what Cali Swag District is doing right now.
Like I said... one or the other. I cannot decide. |

Seriously a MJ sample. Even if it was good it wouldn't get my liking.

I expected them to be one hit, annoying dance song wonders, like the horrible GS Boys. But you know what, this is FIRE. The MJ sample is used well.

I'm on the fence about this one. I mean it's not that bad. The production's hot in a way. Whether or not they do it full justice is still up in the air.

Not bad, but not great.. Michael sample is ok, but I wasn't really feeling it with their style.

To quote the great Charles Barkley "Michael Jackson is rolling over in his grave right now" I would give this a 2 for effort

Umm... you're gonna hear this on the radio at least once... but they really didn't do the song justice at all.

I think I like this song mainly because of the sample.... If the sample wasn't there I probably wouldn't like the song. It sounds good though...

Well its not a bad song, they actually did a great job using MJ's vocals. I like it better then the Dougie song. Cali Swag D. Props keep it up, and you wont be one hit wonders.
