Bobby V - Rock Wit' Cha
Artist: Bobby V
Producer: The Pentagon
Album: Fly on the Wall
Label: Blue Kolla Dreams/Capitol
With his last feature, Bobby V harked back to ‘94, flipping the Bone Thugs’ Foe the Love of $ into a smooth R&B freestyle. On his new single, the Blu Kolla crooner does himself one better, traveling all the way back to ‘89 to put his own spin on Bobby Brown smash Rock Wit’ Cha. Brown’s reputation may have suffered a few bruises since the record’s release, but the tune certainly hasn’t, and B.V. wisely doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Production crew The Pentagon (who seem to have outgrown their former moniker, The Underdogs) hew closely to the original beat, concocting a slightly glossier version of its sultry groove, and Bobby V matches its understated appeal, turning in a vocal performance slightly more emotive than Brown’s. The retro-yet-fresh result has me convinced than this cover was destined to happen (he didn’t even have to change the “Baby, just touch Bobby anywhere” line!), but I’ll leave it to readers to pass final judgment. Those who approve can catch both Bobbys performing the song on Lopez Tonight this Wednesday, as well grabbing a copy of Fly on the Wall when it hits record stores and online retailers March 22.

With "Words" still climbing the charts I am not sure why they decided to already release another single, but I guess you can never have too many hit records, right? I could see "Rock Wit' Cha" leisurely charting and making a slight impact, and I could also see it getting slept on since its a remake and its on the heels of another record which has yet to fully impact. We shall see.

Maybe someday I'll be able to talk to girls in the third person like Bobby, but in the meantime this is a nice take on a true classic. Definitely has the 90s feel, and considering I grew o in the 90s I'm all over it.

This is quality! I actually find it better then the origional, and Bobby V killed it.
It's sad to see real R&B gets overlooked, for club records and/or predictable sexual songs from the likes of Trey Songz (I was a big fan of him, but as of lately... not as much). |
