In the swag-centric world of mainstream hip-hop, it often seems as though an artist’s chances of success hinge on his being able to project a cocky, impossibly confident persona.  Bombast and braggadocio certainly make for entertaining listening, but where does the line lie between swagger and simple vanity?  I don’t have the answer to that question, but I will say that the more down-to-earth rhymes of emcees like Blu can provide a refreshing change of pace from big-timers’ arrogance.  On Vanity(DeathOfAStar)ptOne, Blu’s first DJBooth feature as a main artist rather than a guest contributor, the L.A. native cuts through the pretension to serve up a relaxed, lyrically-driven record with a focus on real life.  God Lee Barns’ jazzy production (bonus points if you can identify the sample being used here – I couldn’t!) provides an old-school vibe as the emcee delivers his introspective verses.  Though no specifics have been given, the record is set for inclusion on a January release; stay tuned to the Booth for details as they arise.

Blu is one of the best artists in the game today, so I'm glad you finally got him in the booth. His album "Below the Heavens" was by far the best hip hop album of '07. I encourage everyone to check it out.

Aight now I know you hip hop heads will like/appreciate this and I can't help if I don't. I don't like it @ all. To me, it's really boring and the rapping is too. pass...

Wow... he's gon get a lot of hate if he keeps thinkin he can serve people with quality music. We want hot garbage music man! “Dumb it down”! Lol
Seriously now, hip hop is more alive (and recommendable) than ever and in good hands with this breed of newcomers.

I've slept on Blu for the longest. So many heads have told me how ill this guy was, but I ignored him. I think I might have missed out on a great cd.

The production on the track is laid back.

Agree with crazy4thao, Blu and Exiles "Below the Heavens" was near-classic status.

This is the homey. I peeped this song about a week ago. Blu & Exile's "Below the Heavens" is like an Instant Classic for hip hop in my book. If you haven't peeped the album, you should. It will change your life (literally) [I don't really condone free music a lot...but it's so serious, if someone hits me up, I will send you the full album, cuz you need to hear it]. This joint was really laid back, fresh and just made me feel good. I can't wait for the new record. YES! THE BOOTH HAS SLEEP ON MY GUY TOO LONG! Beasting! I also love the vintage, jazz samples. Classic.
