When Black ELement last stepped into the Booth, George W. Bush was still President and I had yet to pen my first DJBooth.net track review. Yep, it’s been a minute. Good things, however, come to those who wait – now known by the slimmed-down moniker Black EL, the artist is back to inform us that, far from resting on his laurels following the arrival of his ‘08 debut set, he’s still in a mad Rush to make it to the top. This brand new cut finds producer Durkin cooking up an exhilarating sampled instrumental as EL showcases a rhyme style that’s only grown sharper with time. In addition to impressing with his agile flows, the emcee drops bars dense enough with puns and cultural references to keep lyrical heads coming back for more: “I’m Duck Dodgers, blessed like Our Father, leave a cut in your head like new barbers, I make butter from below so call me Carver.” While this track isn’t set to appear on the Beantown emcee’s forthcoming full-length, those who think Black EL sounds better than ever after his extended absence should be sure to grab a copy of Color Commentary when it hits stores on August 31.

I am always amazed when I hear a dope cut and then come to find out immediately thereafter that it won't make that artist' new project. I always think, "If this wasn't good enough to make it, what should we expect?" Yes, needless to say, expectations from Black EL's new project have been elevated. Hey, its a good thing.

Although I'm sure I listened to his last Booth track a couple years ago, for all intents and purposes this is my introduction to El - and it's one hell of an introduction. I think the track could have actually used a little bit of simplification on the beat side, sometimes a little less is more, but it's still some outstanding production, and the rhymes are ill. I"m def down for some more from El.
