BJ The Chicago Kid - His Pain
Artist: BJ The Chicago Kid
Featuring: Kendrick Lamar
Producer: Sounwave
Album: Pineapple Now & Laters
Label: Motown Records
Why are you here? What is your purpose? BJ The Chicago Kid’s latest track His Pain, with Kendrick Lamar, explores these queries as much as it exposes life’s troubles. Leaked previously as a potential Section.80 inclusion, this melancholic meditation has now been added officially to BJ’s forthcoming album. Kendrick’s signature deep raspy flow takes the first half, outlining how a man can manage to experience life’s blessings, while still being witness to evils and pain around him, or how a sinful man can be spared pain while the innocent suffer. In a low-muffled plea Kendrick calls out to a higher power: “I dunno why He keeps blessing me,” seeking answers about why he deserves favorable treatment before flipping his consciousness and envisioning a purpose in helping and blessing others. BJ’s vocals enter in the second half, continuing this motif and building upon the ruminations with soulful crooning. His voice penetrates the track and gives it emotional catharsis. Both artists are further elevated via the beautiful jazz piano sample by producer Sounwave, who creates a pleasurable hip-hop meets jazz meets blues hybrid. For more from BJ, be sure to check out his Pineapple Now-Laters album, to be released February 14.

Kendrick sounds like he is about to lose his voice - quick, someone get the man a Ricola - but man, is he a dynamic artist. This just acts as a reminder. As for BJ... by the time he arrives on the record you kind of forget that its his song and not Kendrick's. Other than that minor misstep, this is excellent!

Kendrick Lamar talks about real shit, that's what I love about him and I like the voice effect it sounds as if hes at his breaking point and really helps me connect to this song on an emotional level. As for Bj smooth voice nice lyrics no complaints. 4.5

This is F*ckin TOUGH!!! This is some real $hit right here. I love the emotion on here... The beat is tight too. I don't give many 5-star ratings, but this just deserves it. Great Track! Classic for Kendrick Lamar! BJ is a great contrast.

Even though Kendrick voice sounds rough as I don't know what. This is the best song BJ the Chicago Kid has done. I am glad he is finally stepping out creating his own album because he has made several classics as of late

I really like the 1-2 punch of BJ and Kendrick. Kendrick's voice is kinda strange, but he still impresses as usual. My only complaint is that I'd like to hear BJ take on more of a role. It's easy to lean on a strong featured artist like Kendrick, but I think BJ needs to take the track over instead of letting his vocals compliment Kendrick.

Kendrick???? You are now at the top of the 'Real MC' list. This is on the emotional level of 'Dear Mama'. It does not get realer than this. BJ, you're the truest R&B dude in the game right now. I will buy your album for this track alone. CLASSIC...
