Here in Minneapolis, we’re getting to that time of year when stepping outside means running the risk of becoming a human icicle. Which is bad news for us, but good news for the rest of the hip-hop nation – with outdoor activities conveniently off the table, Twin Cities emcees can concentrate fully on the creation of fresh underground jams like Get It In, the latest single from Unknown Prophets member Big Jess. Though the Booth newcomer’s own production, driven by tension-fraught bell arpeggios, sounds as slick and icy as the city streets, he balances it our with a healthy serving of lyrical fire, flaunting his mic skills as he brushes off the amateurs. After Jess has said his piece, freestyle series alum MaLLy grabs the mic to drop an aggressive middle 16, and local mainstay Muja Messiah brings the cut to a strong finish with a pop-referential closing verse (his “David Duchovny/b*tches love me” couplet gets my vote for Hottest Rhyme of the Day). Like what you’re hearing? Plenty more dopeness awaits on Big Jess’ Self Therapy LP, set to hit stores this spring.

I thought this was gonna be an overweight female emcee named Jess? Am I the only one? Anyway, I liked the flow of the record and was impressed with this Big Jess character. And I listened for that "rhyme of the day" which was pretty witty and tight, along w the rest of the lyrics. Good look.

^ Of course there's going to be more than a couple folks who are confused by the name, just ask Tanya Morgan, but once they press play I think people will have to respect his flows. Minneapolis is a hip-hop center.

^^ Proves you cannot judge a book by its cover... or in this case by the cover art for the single haha.
Minne-ap is coming with a real fresh, lively sound these days. And I love it. |

lol i thought it was gonna be a girl also... why did he choose such a weird cover art?? O well...
Anyway.. this is a pretty good record from jess. Not the best of the day, but.. it has presense... the production is kinda boring from him... nothing more to say. |

Judging by the cover art, I wasn't expecting a hardcore street record either, more like a sappy subpar generic, run of the mill R&B track. (which most def. it is not) respect rotation.

Never even heard of this guy before, but I like this track.
