Big Boi - Shine Blockers
Artist: Big Boi
Featuring: Gucci Mane
Producer: DJ Cut Master Swift
Album: Sir Lucious Left Foot: Son of Chico Dusty
Label: Def Jam
Just a couple weeks after dropping his crazy fresh first single Fo Yo Sorrows, one-half of legendary Outkast crew Big Boi is back with his next track, Shine Blockers. Shine is an appropriately gleaming cut featuring production from DJ Cut Master Swift that seamlessly alternates between gospel samples and riding southern percussion, the perfect backdrop for Big Boi to drop his abstract-street rhyme style: “With my southern drawl awkwardly I spray, like the backside of a skunk, in the stashhouse with the pump.” And then there’s Gucci Mane, who makes roughly his 759 guest appearance in the last month with an eminently forgettable verse. I’ve got to believe even the most ardent Gucci lovers are starting to get tired at this point. Shine Blockers isn’t a single - yet, but it could be if the Booth rates it high enough. The fate of the track is in your hands my friends. Act wisely. Big Boi’s upcoming solo debut Sir Lucious Leftfoot: Son of Chico Dusty currently has no release date.

I am still not even CLOSE to sipping the Gucci Mane kool-aid, but this was a damn good track. Big Boi laid down a vintage flow over the even more vintage production. Outkast's production matches their style more than any other artist, which equals solid consistency.

Gucci will ruin any song you put him on, this one is no exception. Does anyone ever understand what he says?!?! I actually like Gucci on the hook tho. I dont want to give this a 3, cuz without gucci this is for sure a 4, but hes on here, if he was just on the hook tho, then it'd be a banger, but he's not, sooo...

Would have been a banger if it wasn't for Gucci. Ludacris would have torn this to pieces. I'm still curious as to where he's been lately.
Anyways, thanks to Big Boi and the production, this is a banger. Could have been a classic. |

I just decided to read the review, and saw that the "fate depends on us to make it a single". Don't make this a single unless Big Boi: takes gucci's verse off, keep gucci's hook tho, and drops another verse :) i'm sure Gucci'll understand, sorry i'm kinda anti-gucci and all of his other friends or clones

Of all of Gucci's guest verses, he has not had one memorable verse in my opinion. He is so average its not even funny. Other than that though, this song is far from average. That production was sick and I always love Big Boi's flow.

This production is blazing hot.. like Z said, it just puts a smile on my face. Big Boi comes hard lyrically and goes perfectly with the beat. My only complaint is Gucci Man.. I really do not understand the hype. I hope the fad dies soon. Oh, and MTV including him on the "Hottest MC's of 2009," but not Eminem? Seriously?

When a production and a rapper are so good they'll make me rate a song a banger despite Gucci's presence... they're damn GOOD!!!
Bassline, sample, breaks, boards, Big Boi's flow... you don't even need to understand English to appreciate this: beautiful! Wisely, Gucci or not: Banger! (what a classic it would've been with Luda indeed) PS: See DJspinz, I'm being tolerant now! ;) |

And the hotness continue to flow from Big Boi as his lyrics dance all over this wonderfully sampled beat and a tolerable performance by Gucci Mane who as always is hard to understand and his raps are so basic that if you heard one Gucci verse you done heard them all. But then the only way the "streets" gone listen to you is thru Gucci. I guess.
So overall, I'm with @Z on this one, with or without Gucci, I bet this song gonna sound crazy in the ride. BANGER!!! |

seems like most da booth dislikes gucci but like him or not he is surrounding himself with some of the best in the game my jury is still out on him but if he keeps the best in the game around him he is sure to improve! Song is pretty good.

Here I come again as a Gucci advocate. I find him one of the most fun rappers to listen to. Hes rapping bout having fun, living the life (but not about living in mansions etc like some other fake rappers), raps visual lyrics and has a great flow, always fun to listen to. While this verse of Gucci's isn't one of my favorites, I completely agree with that1kid that Gucci has really improved within the last year, and I've only liked him recently since this change. Big Boi killed it and I like Gucci on the hook.

Is the feedback on this song enough for artists to quit callin Gucci for guest spots? I hope so. His time in mainstream hiphop is done. 4 + Gucci = 2

This is definitely good so good that gucci could NOT ruin it completely...gucci, gucci, gucci...definitely never a fan..he was ok here..however,Big Boi definitely could have easily found a better suite for this..Ludracis? YES! I wouldn't mind leaving gucci on the hook though..almost classic

Damn this has Outkast stamped all over it. But Gucci Mane DOES NOT need to be on this track. This is the only thing that ruins it for me. Other than that I liked it after the first 15 seconds into it.

I'll give it 3 cuz I'm liking the beat, Big Boi's rapping and the production. But what in the world is up with Big Boi jumping on the Gucci bandwagon? He annoys me everytime I hear his conjested sounding voice. And I suppose hes alright on the chorus, but whenever he raps he shouts "Gucci!" or something that sounds like "Bird!" in the background. over and over. Nice track, Big Boi, but you woulda been fine without Gucci Mane.

Aye, I'm not that big on Gucci either, but he's starting to grow on me. Cut Master Swift's sample of a old school classic has Big Boi's vibe all on it! He did not dissappoint. I can't wait to see what else Big Boi has in store for us. ATL shawty!
