Beyoncé - Love On Top
Artist: Beyoncé
Producer: Beyoncé Knowles, Shea Taylor
Album: 4
Label: Music World/Columbia
Every fiber of my being wants to begin this write-up on Beyoncé’s Love on the Top with a series of sexual entrendres, but in the words of Ron Burgundy, I’m going to keep it classy. On Top, currently best known as the song Queen B performed at the VMAs right before the pregnancy announcement, just got the official single green light, giving the album standout a new life. Shea Taylor and Beyoncé herself share production duties, assembling a horn heavy, live instrument driven beat that, like much of 4, simultaneously harkens back to early ‘90s pop/r&b and classic 60s soul. Vocally B strikes a similar balance, letting her dynamic voice soar above the track (shades of early Whitney perhaps?) but not engaging in the kind of vocal runs and complex breakdowns that she’s dove head first into in the past. So how about it DJBooth Nation? Will Love on Top be the right choice to propel 4 even further up the charts? Share your thoughts below – and don’t forget to applaud me for making it through this entire post without a single sexual pun.

B's VMA performance (pregnant or not) was impressive and the reason is this song. Probably my favorite record off her new album 4. Reminds me of the golden Motown-era R&B/soul stuff that B's flirted with for years. More of this, please.

That performance totally flipped this song inside out for me. Initially, I liked the track but it wasn't my favorite on the album. Now I bump it at least once a day. Great multi-format single choice.

Vocal ability aside -- this is my least favorite Beyonce single...ever! After the VMA performance, I assumed her big announcement would be that she's taking Celine Dion's spot at Ceasar's Palace in Vegas. This song is way too OLD for her. I love Beyonce, she is one of my favorites -- and I commend her for her producing and songwriting endeavors on this album, but she is all over the place. I would not desire to hear this song in any DJ's set at the club.

Let's just say that it's been awhile since I've heard an artist modulate over 4 times solidly hitting that range.
