Beyoncé - 1+1
Producer: The Dream & Tricky Stewart
Album: 4
Label: Music World/Columbia
Before you say a word, yes I’m writing about Beyoncé. Yes, Beyoncé Knowles the singer. Ha! I hope you don’t have a problem with a self-proclaimed Hip-Hop head commenting on some R&B, but I actually dig the record. With it’s American Idol debut last night, 1+1 is the follow up single to Run the World (Girls), which is still struggling with airplay and hasn’t quite grown on critics and fans alike, even with the release of a big budget video. Queen B returns with a bit of math in her new single, which may be an ode to husband Shawn Carter (I think you all might know him as Jay-Z) or mathematicians. Either way, the first track on her upcoming 4 release (how many numbers can I fit into this post), with it’s sound reminiscent of Dangerously in Love 2, may be just what her fan base is looking for. Truth be told, I also don’t know much about algebra, but 1+1 is basic math, so it’s easy for me to understand love (and the lyrics to this song), considering I am smarter than a fifth grader. Starting with it’s soft strings, and the opening line “If I ain’t got nothing…” from a entertainer who has it all, Beyoncé definitely flexes her vocals on this smooth ballad. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Beyonce’s upcoming 4, scheduled to drop June 24, is it’s lone feature with Andre 3000. I’d assume a lot of folks are looking forward to that cut. In the meantime, enjoy 1+1.

Honestly, I think the last Beyonce song I listened to before this was Single Ladies. But after listening to this I should really start listening to some R&B again. She does a great job on this track!

Wow...Just WOW! Beyonce finally created something to cleanse our ears after that "Girls" mess. This song exudes love and passion infused with Prince and John Mayer-style guitar riffs. I'm not sure about it being a mainstream single, but I know R&B radio will eat this up if its time length is edited a bit shorter.

maybe its me but this reminds me of something that was left off of cadillac records soundtrack. with that being said beyonce has always impressed me with her strong vocals (well since she went solo) i like this one definately better than these girl power songs.

I don't hate it, but I don't think it's all that amazing. It's just better than that Girls rule the world garbage, but that's not hard to do. Sounds like 1 of Prince's throwaways...

Whether you dig 'Run the World' or this one, you cannot deny that no one in mainstream popular music does it like B. She's miles ahead of the rest (Rihanna, Britney, Katy etc etc) - p.s. Banger

If only Jay-Z hadn't met her first... She has always been my number one celebrity crush.
Beyonce definitely bounced back after "Run The World", which was disappointing. I am really impressed with this track. She has so much strength and passion in her voice. She is such a special artist with so much talent. |

The Dream definitely helped write this song. "1 + 1 = 2" sounds like one of those complicated lines he'd come up with.

She almost creates classic. But this song isn't lived in. The emotion isn't there. And she substitutes grit with yelling. If Chrisette or someone who sings, or knows how to sing, from pain and real places, this track would be earth-shattering.

Anyone who says that this woman can't sing has absoulutely no knowledge of music. Did she just release a pretty bad song called "Run the World"? Yes. But this is galaxies away from that. This is the kind of song that has made her who she is today. Amazing song. Like many above, i'm a fan.

I think Beyonce was inspired by what R. Kelly's been doing recently. This song has some serious classic potential. Production is solid, and the performance is amazing. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because it doesn't really fit my personal tastes.

Not something I usually hear at the DJBooth, so I had to adjust my ears for this one. Thankfully, I am a big r&b fan and my ears adjust quickly to the sound. In that case, this is an absolute burner! So so so much better than the first single.
