Whatever it is they’ve been pumping into the Durham tap water, it seems to be working. With Thee Tom Hardy‘s brand new Secret of Thee Green Magic mixtape currently burning up our Mixtape Chart, a whole crew of Bull City newcomers have showed up to make their mark on our front page. Made up of pianist Eric Hirsch, drummer Stephen Coffman, bassist Peter Kimosh and rapper Pierce Freelon, jazz/hip-hop crew The Beast are joined by soul veteran Nnenna Freelon (Pierce’s mother) on this unreleased bonus cut. A Booth-exclusive world premiere, Black Fantastic finds producer Simtraks serving up a lush bell-string groove as Freelon, along with fellow N.C. natives King Mez and Kaze drop bars as smart as they are hard-hitting. Freelon in particular delivers some downright bruising lines: “Call me sire, like Mez, break necks of hip-hop heads, like Pez… we be killin’ kids like SIDS, independent music, you know what it is.” While this smooth banger didn’t make it onto the album proper, those who like what they’re hearing can find more dope tunes on the 9th Wonder-hosted Freedom Suite, out now online.

This song first appeared on the Independent Chart on November 29, 2010

The Carolinas are KILLING it right now. Seriously, I cannot think of another state, city, or entire region that has consistently churned out quality tune after quality tune (word to J. Cole). I had not heard of The Beast before last week and I had not heard The Beast until today. Glad things changed.

The production is on an "Oooooh, sh*t" level and the guest contributions from Mez and Kaze are both excellent. This is one quality bonus cut.

Legendary production, that you'd wouldn't expect from the actual artists. Props there. Plus everyone flows great over it. More props.

Echo Z - what is it about the Carolinas that's producing new dope artists daily? I don't want to get puny so I'll refrain from calling this track a beast, but it's definitely a monster. I'm down to hear more from these guys anyday.

First of all, I just of late heard The Beast on live 365's Neo soul, E-coustic radio, and I have loved progressive Jazz and Hip-Hop when it first started back in early ninty, The beast is well in progress and bless Mrs. Freelon.
