When B.o.B‘s May 25th mixtape hit the ‘net back in February, readers and staff agreed that Gladiators was a cut above the rest. Today, slowpokes who still have yet to listen to the project can finally hear what the fuss is about. On this slow-burning banger, heavyweight producer The Alchemist serves up a densely-layered instrumental fraught with tense synths and glimmering piano riffs as B.o.B and fellow buzzmaker J. Cole suit up for battle. The rappers aren’t fighting amongst themselves – on the contrary, they seem determined to take on the whole damned industry. The headliner comes with even more intense flows than usual, while Cole keeps things a little lower-key, spitting guest bars that drip with steely determination. Needless to say, the record should have readers cheering just like spectators at the Colosseum. If you’re a Bobby Ray devotee, you’ll be happy to hear that the album release date cited in the title of his latest mixtape has already been rendered incorrect. Say what?! That’s right: the artist’s debut set, The Adventures of B.o.B, has been pushed ahead to April 27.

Glad this was liberated. Now, we just need the rest of that dope tape to land in the untagged form (TJ, Bri - you can send it over to my inbox anytime).
Alchemist (like Double-O in the Kidz in the Hall feature) is such a consistent producer. This has an epic feel to it. I would have liked to hear once more emcee rip it a part. |

yo alchemist is DOPE!!! Ever since he made that beat for Mobb Deep "Twisted" in 04'. But lately he been ghost just now. He's also a nice emcee. Also J.Cole is a sleeper too just got signed with Jay-Z renamed label RocNation. A lot of people don't that the dopiest underground emcees are from North Carolina

I was waiting for the DJ Drama drops to take over the intro, glad to hear the DJ-less version. This is a star studded track and neither MC's disappoint. I would have liked to get more from Alchemist on the beat tho

This track is tight. BOB is very dope. J Cole kills it too. Two of the better new artists out now.

@The 149th Damn, I don't know why either. This is one of those tracks that I first heard in my car and the second the Alchemist beat kicked in I instinctively reached for the volume. Just let it bang. It's rare that emcees live up to such an epic beat, but Bobby and Cole absolutely kill it.
Completely side note, can we dead the "simba/lion" line? I feel like I've heard 100 different versions at this point. Let's move on. |

The beat delivers and both emcees spit good 16s on track, it’s J.Cole that takes the upper hand with his stanzas. April 27th!
---------------------------- Hey, many blessing sent from heaven, thanking God to be alive, flight attendant woke me up, said Mr. Cole you have arrived, welcome, in this game, the price of fame is steep, lord help em, keep em sane, prayin’ that the heat won’t melt em, I’m headed to the top, I couldn’t be more welcome, took the lead role, now look, I’m right outside your peephole, that’s for the crown-holders, never would I dethrone, but if you ever leave home, don’t worry I’ll keep your seat warm So yeah I’m Simba in a sense, I’m the prince, you impostas, no Mufasas, but there’s Oscars for you gents, when I say I’m better then you n!ggas, don’t mean no offense, But it’s clear with no tints, man just check the fingerprints, you’ll see we’re not the same, I got a sh!t list with lots of names, and plus a hit list of rappers Imma cock and aim, then it’s who shot ya mane? This is good, but "out of time", "don't feel so good", or "suprise me" would have been better selections in my opinion.

The whole mixtape is just something else and this song is a step above the rest. After the first listen you think J.Cole had B.o.B, but both artists are sure to take over.

@ Nathan I feel your pain about over used lines. The bear arms/ bare arms comes to mind, but J. Cole is the Young Simba, can't get around that.
I don't know how I missed this track but it came up in the related column. Two of my favorite new artists doing their thing. Great work. |
