AZ - The Calm
Artist: AZ
Producer: Statik Selektah
Album: Doe or Die: 19th Anniversary Edition
Label: Quiet $$/Fastlife/E1
Don’t let the title deceive you: The Calm, the latest single from AZ, is not exactly chill-out material. Unless you consider drug-dealing and gunplay appropriate activities for a relaxing evening – in which case, remind me never to attend any cocktail parties at your place. Anyway, this hard-nosed joint finds recent Booth interviewee Statik Selektah handling production duties, crafting a driving funk instrumental complete with an intro sampled from blues singer Keb Mo’s Rainmaker and a hook sampled from AZ’s own Problems. On the lyrical tip, the Brooklyn mainstay keeps it street, offering a litany of reasons to stay on your toes if you find yourself walking through his neighborhood after dark. The moral of this story? To quote the emcee quoting his own most famous guest appearance, “Life’s a b*tch – n*ggas die on the norm.” Fans can find The Calm, along with a few more new joints, on AZ’s heavily revamped 15th Anniversary re-release of debut studio album Doe or Die, scheduled to hit store shelves and online retailers November 23.

"The Calm" represents an artist whose sound has not changed in two decades, still as fresh as ever. There is a reason AZ is still making new music with quality producers like Statik and that is because he is time-tested and highly respected. BK, stand up.

Az was always one of those artists that never really became a household name, even though he 's as skilled as anyone else on the mic. But what he's lost in commercial success he's gained in respect, and this is exactly why.
By the way, one of my favorite Statik beats in a minute. Selekt did a perfect job of balancing the soft and hard elements on that beat. |

He spit one of the best verses hip-hop verses ever on "Life's a B****," in my opinion he’s one of the most underrated emcees of all time.
But just like Z said, since 94 to now he hasn’t changed at all. AZ + Statik = Classic AZ’s verse on “Life’s a B*****” was #15 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Lyrical Performances http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_rap-lyr-perf.html |

After all these years and AZ can still put out quality song says something about him as an artist. I'm sure if anyone can it'd be him to duplicate a classic just has his peers have done in the last year
