Avery Storm - It's Not Over
Artist: Avery Storm
Producer: The Heatmakerz
Album: Diary of the Takeoff
Label: Stupid Robot/Blast Off
As I detailed in my review of his Category 5 mixtape, Avery Storm, like his musical kindred spirits Janis Joplin or Macy Gray, has one of those voices that breaks almost every rule about how you’re supposed to sing, but only sounds more captivating for its originality. Storm’s far from average vocal cords are on full display again on It’s Not Over, a soulful cut that despite the subject matter, and his darker previous material, sounds almost celebratory, an effect no doubt enhanced by The Heatmakerz’ retro-soul production work. Sure, the haters will find plenty to get worked up about here, but fans will find just as much, if not more, to fall in love with. Personally, it’s all love from where I sit. For more only-Avery-Storm-sounds-like-this jams like It’s Not Over, check out his DJBooth hosted Diary of the Takeoff mixtape, out now, and be on the lookout for more info about his upcoming album Shotgun Love, due to (hopefully) drop this year.

I agree with "DjKidd" the production was decent but something didn't quite fit together.

To truly appreciate this record I suggest downloading - for free - the entire project here at the Booth. It will give you (the listener) a sense of the direction Avery and the Heatmakerz took on the project and allow you to better appreciate the artistry that is on display.

Couldn't help but think that this sounds like an upbeat Maxwell song. Easily in rotation, but the melody just slightly outshines the vocals for me.

Agree with DjKidd. I've loved this dude on rap hooks(Rick Ross and Jada's songs) so I was hoping to like his music. But hopefully it's just this song because it was just a little boring. His voice is great and Heatmakerz's beat was solid but overrall, the song was just missing that it factor. That makes you bounce and sing-a-long. Maybe it's the hook but the song could of been better. Still got big hopes for Avery.

Heatmakerz production steals the show; hopefully this puts them back on the scene after being on top during the Dipset days

Been listening to the mixtape for the last 24 hours, and this is definitely one of the best cuts. Matthew Kyle's right, it's in that Maxwell territory, and that's a hell of a compliment. My favorite Storm tracks have a little more edge to them than It's Not Over, but I could still listen to this all day. It's music that makes you feel good - what more could you want?
