Asher Roth - Lark On My Go Kart
Artist: Asher Roth
Producer: Oren Yoel and David Appleton
Album: Asleep in the Bread Aisle
Label: SB/SRC/Def Jam
Let it not be said that Asher Roth is out of touch with his audience—foregoing the traditional Tuesday release, the up-and-coming emcee has scheduled his debut studio album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, to drop on the one date college kids are sure to remember. You guessed it: 4/20 (a Monday). Need more convincing? Take a listen to the the LP’s opening track; on Lark On My Go Kart, Asher spits a series of references sure to have his target demographic in hysterics, while leaving many outsiders scratching their heads. Over an unconventionally catchy beat by Oren Yoel and David Appleton, he addresses everything from Bob Saget and Troll dolls to Bluetooth and… blumpkins? While I Love College was undeniably fresh, that song’s success would be hard to replicate; Lark On My Go Kart could be a better indication of where Roth is headed—if that’s the case, Asher may be angling to become the Family Guy generation’s rapper laureate.

Asher Roth knows what college kids like- a song about Mario Kart is another perfect example. This won't be as big of a theme as I Love College, but I liked the flow of the track and the humorous lyrics.

"I Love College" was a pretty tight song, but I looked at Asher Roth as a one-hit wonder. I'm not saying that this song will keep him in the game, but it was surprisingly pretty cool. I'm not gonna lie, I enjoyed listening to it.

"I Love College" took awhile to grow on me...maybe this will too!

If it hasn't yet (here you go Z)
someone should really point out how hard it is to break through when you sound exactly like one of the greatest MC's of all time. Asher is good sh*t but at the same time I really feel like he isn't adding to the game or taking away from it. He's just another goofy guy rapping some pop culture references. |

Probably the worst song on the booth today (though all have been pretty good today). I pretty much agree with djcarboard.

If you say he can't spit you seriously need to GTFO. Regardless of the subject matter(MARIO KART!!!) he goes so hard. This is a banger-line Classic. 4.7/5
((Might I propose we upgrade to a 10 star system)) |

the only way dude is compared to eminem, is cuz he sounds like him, lyrically he is far far away, its a tight song but this wont be as big as i love college, its good dont get me wrong... but in my opinion he aint getting far... i looked up other songs by him, i cant vibe to none of them, he's just not good, he can make 2 hits max total, but his album will consist of 2 or 3 good songs and the rest are SKIP

his lyricism is well know and he displays it on this track. the song has a freestyle feel and itz a good head bobber track, sort of feel good but not club worthy.

No credit for taking EM's style and voice, and flow...None at all! It's just like Eminem himself once said..."watching these cheap imitations get rich off 'em...like they switched wallets"

blaze he sounds like em yes he can change that but everythin else is different, i listen to eme since he came out and i been on roth since he cam out only similarity is voice, thats it, flow is different style is different content is way different. but its like if u gonna hate roth then u gotta hate damn near everyone in the industry cuz just about everyone sounds the same nowadays,

I go to college and found "I Love College" quite original and a great song. However, I can't see anyone at my school playing this, I see it getting shut off mid song because there is nothing to keep you interested. Just some random quirky lyrics, tight beat but don't like the way HE sounds on it.

Love the flow and the fresh beat! Catchy indeed! I like how we can actually understand every word he says, good diction, huh Z? ;) |

so this dude voice sounds like em, but does his flow? i dont think so. this is ashers flow, and asher doin his thing. em wouldnt do something comparable to this. i like this a lot. his lyrics are just ridiculous

I have to say that I LOVE when rappers spit real life lyrics/stories. Ash is one of those dudes that do that perfectly for me. I also love his awkward/diction-conscious flow. The production isn't the best, but it suits the song and Roth's flow well, and I like when the piano kicks in (although it sounds a little too distorted to me)
P.S.: dude does NOT sound like Em... he just has that same type of accent. Em's voice is way more harsh and his flow is more intense. Ash always just sounds laid back, like a college student... |

@djblaze: no disrepect at all, but Eminem wasn't even talkin about ppl takin his flow, as you probably know, he was talkin about Biggie and Pac immitations.

I dont know what "Z" is waiting for because I dont think anyone ,except possibly him, even think the two are alike. other than their skin color and profession. Anyway, this song is okay. I Love College was a one hit wonder for Asher Roth, and I dont think anything will get better than that. But who knows? Hes been working alot and may surprise me. Okay song though..2 Stars!

@Sdawg23 - I beg to differ, my friend. Asher's cadence at times mimics Slim Shady to the tee. Additionally, they both are very crafty with their wordplay. Since I've heard a lot more of Asher's new album that you have, please due me a favor and trust me (in addition to not mocking my comments - thanks).

Dont call me your friend Z. You obviously are only comparing them according to their skin color. "Crafty with wordplay"?. HA! Good one. Im pretty sure every artist in the rap industry is pretty crafty with words. But nice try. Eminem took his career from humor, to drama, and beyond! I'd love to see Asher Roth attempt a song with depth and insight. 8 Mile and The Curtain Call didnt seem too funny to me, I'm not sure about you? You might know more about this quick-fame rapper Asher Roth, but you clearly dont know nearly as much as I do about Eminem.

@Sdawg23 - If you re-read my comment above, you'll notice that I wrote I was waiting for OTHER members to make the comparisons... I didn't compare the two at all.
When you questioned my comment, I offered reasons why people might find the two similar - having nothing at all to do with skin color. What exactly are you trying to prove? That nobody holds a candle to Eminem? That you know more about him than anyone else? What? |

DJ Booth Member Total Ratings: 29 |
No, I'm simply stating that your comment regarding the two at all was simply incorrect. Only 1 other person who seemed to not know much about either commented concerning both rappers. Im just saying that they dont compare at all other than the slim shady album with comical lyrics and funny phrases. And yes, I do know a lot about Eminem, considering I've listened to him my whole life. You on the other hand, have only listened to Asher Roth for about a month maximum. You may comment back, but I am done arguing because your outer knowledge concerning the two rappers is inferior. ~PEACE~

@Sdawg23 - LOL, my "comment" was "incorrect"? Okay.
But you are right, there is nothing more to discuss (not argue). You are CLEARLY more knowledgeable about music than I am. It's not like I run an online music magazine or anything... pretty please come work for us. |
