Asher Roth - G.R.I.N.D. (Get Ready It's a New Day)
Artist: Asher Roth
Producer: 1500 or Nothin'
Album: Untitled Sophomore Album
Label: SB/SRC/Def Jam
Asher Roth came on the scene about as far from a serious rapper as you could get. With songs about partying and college life, a lot of true hip-hop fans may have been turned off by any new Roth tracks before they even gave them a chance. However, if you’ve actually listened to the young spitter recently, then you should notice by now he’s actually dope. Asher is set to kick off a new and improved version of himself with the release of his new single G.R.I.N.D., off his upcoming, untitled and unscheduled sophomore album. Made with the help of 1500 or Nothin on the beat, Roth shows that life isn’t all about partying and being immature, and actually spits some knowledge a lot of us can relate to. Although the hook sounds like something from a Visa commercial, this is definitely a step in the right direction. So is he ready for the hip-hop world, or is he destined to be a Van Wilder for life? That’s up to you Booth members.

I must say I am very very impressed. I unfairly soured on Roth after coming away very disappointed with his debut offering, but this is an impressive departure from that project. If he has an inspired, mature clump of records like "Grind" ready to go on a new album I cannot wait to hear it.

This is a very Cudi-esque song by Mr. Roth. Though unlike most Kid Cudi imitators, this style is both fitting and catchy for Asher. Overall, this is a cool, refreshing change from his past records.

This song is straight FIRE, I liked this guy since "I Love College", but he's definitely showing growth.

Definitely a new sound and it works. Only thing off was the hook which sounded a bit cheesy. I like the mature side of him but he should keep the party side as well. I Love College was a topic rappers haven't touched probably since The Beastie Boys. He's also steped up his lyrics too, which I'm glad. I liked some of the songs on his debut but felt overrall the lyrics were the weakest thing about it. So hopefully his next album will be great with a more lyrical and mature Asher but still knows how to be a party animal.

The best record I have heard from Asher Roth to date. The snares on this hit hard. The chorus definitely seems very KiD CuDi influenced [That's a good thing] as @TheBaytoLa points out. Very dope.

Honestly, his socially conscious rhymes just aren't as good as his party/punchline rhymes, but I'm stoked to hear the man taking a more mature approach. He's really been impressing lately, and now I'm stoked to hear this next album. I'm just saying, don't write off Asher. He might just end up being great.

I knew Asher had this type of potential after he dropped his freshman album. I just knew it would take some time and maturity for him to reach his full capabilities! The future is bright for this kid! I'm feelin da track!! It's going in full rotation.

This is a banger. Asher Roth was definitely on his G.RI.N.D. The lyrics and the wordplay of the hook is catchy along with the chorus.
The production is good. It reminds me as if the party just ended and this was the next song that everyone left to. Overall it is an inspiring record that will bleed onto mainstream radios. |

1500 or Nothing really does it for me on this track. I like the fact that its got a kinda commercial feel to it. I think the direction he was going in before was just getting a little old. I liked it initially, but it just didn't keep my interest. This song would give him a whole new demographic of listeners too. I think he'll get a more mature listener with this one.

He is definitely growing better as he gets older. I didn't really like I Love College but this one is way better. I personally like the hook and the words are smart (the words have improved a lot since I love college) If he keeps this vibe and flow up his next album will be a huge hit.

I’m not normally into this sing along rap, but Asher’s dope word play makes me like this song more. There’s not doubt that Asher can really rap but it’s just about turning potential into proof, which he does with this song.

I think Asher was always like this to a certain extent, but the singles chosen from "Asleep" didn't reflect that. But this is a great first single. I applaud.

Asher is genuine. You gotta respect a person willing to do what he loves and express himself. There is no honor in clowning that. Don't judge a book by its cover, don't judge a hyped mc by his first album....everybody ain't 50. Ash is showing a different side, but staying true to his own style. 1500 does his thing on the production. Solid.

I'm actually very surprised at how much I like this track. But I think a lot of my surprise comes from my bias towards Roth. Maybe its time I give him another shot.
