If I could select one pop record to broadcast into space, to represent the best of Western culture to the rest of the galaxy, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second: The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back would be that joint. Anthony Flammia‘s I Want You Back, by contrast, is not the crowning achievement of our civilization—but those who set their standards just a little bit lower will undoubtedly find the Yonkers crooner’s solo Booth debut a dope listen. On this wistful breakup ballad, the artist and co-producer Joseph Lindsay‘s warm piano chords, fingersnaps and overdubbed doo-wop harmonies set the mood as the artist pines over an ex-girl, in the process exhibiting a uniquely earthy, understated vocal style.
