Ab-Soul - Moscato
Artist: Ab-Soul
Producer: Tae Beast
Album: Longterm Mentality
Label: Top Dawg Ent.
Ab-Soul may be as West Coast as they come, but his new leaked single Moscato with Kendrick Lamar invokes a strong West Side Chicago vibe a la Do or Die’s mid-90s cruising classic Po Pimp. Producer Tae Beast makes good use of silky bass lines and dreamy strings to create a Blaxploitation-era sound that would please The Mack himself. Ab-Soul even lends his vocals to the hook in praise of the mind-erasing and soothing properties of the vino beverage: “When life gets too hard to swallow, just grab a bottle of moscato!” It’s pretty funny to imagine Soul and Lamar rapping about women and weed while holding wine glasses - maybe they drink it straight from the bottle, who knows. In any event, Moscato seems to be on a steady path to prevalence as the drink of choice among emerging rappers, so it’s fitting that a song like this one has come to pass. The single can be found on Soul’s Longterm: Mentality project, which doesn’t current have a hard release date. As always, DJBooth will be on top of it whenever the word becomes official.

I'm not a fan of Moscato, or any wine for that matter, but I totally dig Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar. The laid back sound, and chorus delivery, work real well for both emcees. A head nodder indeed.

Man this joint is hot. Smooth, kick back verses wrapped with this golden production! Never heard of either on this record but will be anticipating more in the near future!

Really like that they're switching up the pace here, but I can't help but like my Kendrick and Ab-Soul a little more on the real rap/aggressive side. They're both dope emcees, but I don't know if they've got their ladies man flows completely down yet.

...The beat reminded me of "Timeless" off of Khalifa's B.A.R.
