An uncredited contributer to four tracks off Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d. city, JMSN is now hard at work on a full-length project with another Black Hippy affiliate and DJBooth fave, Ab-Soul. When two artists as adventurous as the Detroit singer/songwriter and the Carson-repping emcee come together, it’s tough to know what to expect but, on the lead single, they play so well off each other that it’s a little scary. At first blush, the only thing to distinguish You’re Gone from a typical ode to lust in the club is JMSN’s eerie production. When the hook rolls around and Ab informs the woman he’s pursuing, “Since you’ve been good, I’ve slipped a present in that drink you drinkin’,” it becomes clear that there’s more here than meets the ear. What exactly the duo were trying to convey with this dark send-up of rap cliché, I’m not sure—but the result is certainly provocative. If your interest is piqued, keep it locked for more leading up to Unit 6‘s February release via Top Dawg Entertainment/White Room Records.

Different sound/content than what we're traditionally used to from Soulo but the JMSN production is incredible. Ever since I heard Priscilla I've been hooked.
