Plenty of hip-hop artists have tried to craft headphone-ready vibe-out music, but few seem able to strike the balance of hypnotic grooviness, ethereal melodicism, and smooth rhymes necessary to achieve maximum relax-i-tude (OK, that’s not a word, but you get what I’m driving at here). With Drift Away, the latest leak off his 2DopeBoyz/DJBooth-sponsored LongTerm 2 mixtape, Ab-Soul takes a shot at creating the perfect mellow-out joint. Beatsmith Pro Logics certainly gets his part of the job done, whipping up a dreamy, midtempo froth of synth-piano ambiance, and Ab comes with laid-back bars to match, recounting his efforts to get a certain enchanting shawty’s digits over the course of a series of chance meetings. As far as I’m concerned, the only thing stopping Drift Away from being a vibe-out cut par excellence is a slight whiff of dissonance on the sung hook – of course, it’s hard to get worked up about the details when the overall chill factor is so high. This is Ab-Soul's second feature (out of his last three) at the Booth that has me overly jazzed about the prospects for his future. Like "Mayday," which was outstanding, "Drift Away" is captivating, impactful, and excellent head phone music. The hook could have been a little better, but even that rain won't ruin this 4-minute party.

I love almsot evrything about this track. his delivery was perfect for this, the vibe matches the beat, and the hoook was decent, maybe a another mix would help, but i really like this song regardless. I'm gonna go listen to his other track as well. I'm gonna check out pro logic as well

Interesting use of that sample. Totally smooth, definitely ipod music for the morning jog. I'll go back and listen to some of his past features too. I'm intrigued now.

Ab-Soul's been absolutely killing it lately. He's reached that point where I automatically listen to anything new he does - and Drift Away is yet another reason why. Can't remember hearing a story-telling flow from him quite like this before, and he has some serious skills. I'm not in love with the hook, but it's a small complaint.
