Young Son & Hypel

Minneapolis, MN -- Walking into downtown Minneapolis' Fine Line Music Cafe for the March 4th kickoff of MUSIC2DREAM2, a concert series presented by local emcee and DJBooth member Michael “Young Son” Hannah, I assumed that the name was simply a catchy tie-in to the title of his sophomore LP, Dreamer's Poetry, but that wasn't the case—as quickly became clear, the tour was a truly collaborative labor of love, in which many of the Twin Cities' most noteworthy under-the-radar talents had come together to make their musical dreams a reality.

Young Capo

First to hit the stage was Young Capo, a 19-year old rapper who mixed introspective cuts like “Empty Dreamz” with harder-hitting material detailing his sky-high ambitions. After a quick, two-song set by Kid Auspicious, hip-hop storyteller Hypel stepped into the spotlight; highlights of his set included an intense performance of “Runnin',” the lead single off his forthcoming debut LP, and a cut describing his feelings around the birth of his son. After providing hook vocals on one of Hypel's records, R&B singer Brandon Trevon treated the audience to a few of his own jams.

Though all the acts came with plenty of positive energy, the night truly kicked into high gear when Young Son stepped onstage. After a spoken-word intro backed by A.J. Soul's ambient keyboard accompaniment, he launched straight into a high-octane set drawn mainly from the forthcoming Dreamer's Poetry LP (due out in May).

The indisputable highlight of the show was Young Son's “Juicy Remix” of Booth-approved single “This Far.” With the original beat from Biggie's 1994 classic booming in the background, the emcee had the audience rapping along as he turned in a passionate performance clearly inspired by the late icon's out-of-this-world stage presence.

Hannah prefaced his last song, “Hello World,” with a few words on the tour, “What keeps me going is the ambition of knowin' I'm going somewhere someday—that's what MUSIC2DREAM2 is all about!”

Alyssa Pintar & Max Haben

Max Haben and his backing band, the Fix, capped the show off with a blend of rock and hip-hop that had one enthusiastic audience member doing the worm. By the time all the night's performers took the stage to say a few closing words, it was clear that the passionate dedication to music that brought these big dreamers together had the potential to take them farther than they'd ever thought possible.
