DJBooth & RefinedHype Present the Weekly Rap Up - Vol. 1
Every week DJBooth.net's partner site RefinedHype.com takes everything that's new in urban music and culture and refines it for a discriminating audience (that would be you). In the first of a regular series we're calling the Weekly Rap Up we take a look back at some of the music and stories that made this week so memorable. Enjoy.
Big Fat Block o'Wu-Tang: This week RefinedHype took a detour to Staten Island and delivered a big fat block of new Wu-Tang goodness. In addition to a new track from GZA, Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck called Steppin 2, Method Man, Ghostface and Raekwon leaked a new track off their upcoming Wu Massacre album called Our Dreams that features the killer bee trio at their most romantic (which really isn't that romantic). Throw in a dope Wu-Tang vs. The Beatles blend mixtape and an in-depth breakdown of their classic video Triumph and you've got enough new Wu to fill all 36 chambers.
KRS-ONE & Buckshot Tribute Mixtape Survival Kit: The word "classic" gets thrown around far too lightly these days, but I can say without hesitation that KRS-ONE and Buckshot are too classic emcees in every sense of the word, and as their recent collabo album Survival Skills proves. With that in mind, Mick Boogie, nVMe and Duck Down Records have joined forces to pay tribute to the two legendary mic killers with the new Survival Kit mixtape, a collection of remixes to some of KRS and Buck's most well known songs by the likes of Fashawn, Skyzoo, Sha Stimuli, Tanya Morgan, Torae and more. All praise due. Click here to download.
Mike Dreams Hop-Hope Anthem (Hello World): Minneapolis stand up! This week one of DJBooth's up-and-coming favorites Mike Dreams premiered his new track Hip-Hope Anthem (Hello World) on our pages, where it garnered an impressive four star rating (so far) and some readers like HoamBoy calling it "the best song I've heard from Mike." Meet Jay Electonica, Hip-Hop’s Jesus Christ: Sure Jay Electronica's a dope emcee, but is he really the new hip-hop messiah? Our very own Jacques Morel thinks so: "I start with this statement, which I believe is 100% true: If Hip Hop was Christianity, Jay Electronica would be Jesus Christ. Slow down people. Before you start taking up torches and appealing for my excommunication, listen to what I have to say. Everywhere I go Jay Electronica has become the bench mark for what is dope, real, and lyrical Hip Hop." To read the entire article, click here.
Hip-Hop's Best (and Worst) Names: Almost nothing matters more to a rapper’s career than their moniker, and yet there’s definitely a huge divide between hip-hop’s best, and worst, names. For every Ghostface Killah out there we've got a Diddy, for every Busta Rhymes there's an Ice-T waiting in the wings. While this is by no means a definitive list - I expect to update it regularly, here’s a few names to get us started. To read more click here.
The New Source: Why Record Sales Don’t Mean Sh*t: After posting iLL-Literacy’s fiercely creative new track iB4the1 Chapter 1 I began talking to group member Adriel Drizzletronius about some of his future-oriented views on where the music industry is headed and invited him to share his vision with RefinedHype nation. These are the results. Warning: If you work for a major record label, you might want to make sure you’ve got a defibrillator nearby. To read more, click here.
