VH1 Honors Hip-Hop’s Legendary Label Def Jam [Exclusive Coverage]

Public Enemy may at first seem an odd fit for the once adult-contemporary focused VH1, but over the last few years the channel has made a concerted effort to reach out to hip-hop nation, most prominently with their annual Hip-Hop Honors show.
Taking place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and hosted by the always unpredictable Tracy Morgan, this year’s festivities focused on honoring the legacy of one of hip-hop’s pioneering labels, Def Jam. For 25 years Def Jam has been at the centerpiece of all things hip-hop, launching the careers of old school artists like Public Enemy and LL Cool J and setting the pace for the modern day culture with rap icons like Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Who better to honor hip-hop and Def Jam’s seminal place in it than the artists themselves? Hip-Hop Honors featured an appropriately all-star line-up with performance from artists like Eminem, Ludacris, Method Man, Mary J. Blige, Rick Ross, The Roots and many, many more.
Of course, no show would be complete without a red carpet and an after party featuring some of the best and brightest young stars alongside some old(er) school legends like Chrisette Michelle, Kid Rock, Luther Campbell (star of his own new VH1 show) and of course...wait for it...wait for it...Flava Flav!
In addition to honoring Def Jam, many of the night's attendees were walking the red carpet to show their support for VH1's Save the Music Foundation. Save the Music is dedicated to restoring and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child's complete education, an issue that needs our attention now more than ever as the recession leads to budget cuts at public schools.
