Upcoming Rap & R&B Album Alert: Weeknd’s “Kiss Land”, 2 Chainz’ “B.O.A.T.s II” & More
Here at The DJBooth we strive to always keep our readers well informed of all the latest album, mixtape and EP releases. So every Friday we will preview the week ahead in new releases, highlighting the hip hop projects, both free and sold, that should be on your music radar. Starting with...
The Weeknd "Kiss Land"
The Weeknd is living proof that the power of an industry cosign is still valuable in today’s game. The minute Drake gave his stamp of approval to his fellow Toronto native, The Weeknd went from unknown YouTube singer to a viral sensation. Over the course of 2011, The Weeknd dropped three well-received free releases that showcased his dark and unique brand of R&B. The buzz also earned the mysterious artist a deal with Universal Republic and an opportunity for a remastered, major label release of his previous work. This Tuesday, The Weeknd will finally unleash his proper debut, titled “Kiss Land”, to the world. We’ll soon find out whether The Weeknd’s sound can connect with wider audience, or if he’s already reached his ceiling. [Full Preview]
Janelle Monáe "The Electric Lady"
It’s been three years since Janelle Monáe wowed listeners with the psychedelic stylings of her debut album “The ArchAndroid.” While the critics loved her, Monae did not experience the same commercial success as many of her peers. Since then, the sultry songstress has earned a higher profile due in part to an appearance on fun’s hit single “We Are Young” and joining CoverGirl’s lineup of spokeswomen. Monae returns Tuesday with her second LP titled “The Electric Lady,” which features a robust 19 tracks. While fans are certainly anticipating this effort based on Monáe's talent alone, collaborations with Prince and Erykah Badu have only added to the intrigue behind her latest offering. [Full Preview]
2 Chainz B.O.A.T.s II: Me Time
It’s amazing what a name change can do for a man. Just a few years ago, the hip hop world vaguely remembered the artist formerly known as Tity Boi as one of the guys in Playaz Circle. Today, 2 Chainz is one the biggest rappers in the industry. After dominating 2012 with his major label debut and a string of guest appearances that would rival Lil’ Wayne at his peak, 2 Chainz returns with his sophomore effort “B.O.A.T.s II: Me Time” this coming Tuesday. The ATLien seems poised for another chart topper with hitmakers like Pharrell, Mike WiLL Made It, Diplo, DJ Toomp and Mannie Fresh enlisted this time around. [Full Preview]
Planet Asia x DirtyDiggs - High End Cloths EP
Planet Asia must constantly be in the studio because the Bay Area emcee has releasing new music at a furious pace. While he was busy in 2012, his output this year displays a work ethic on another level. The Gold Chain Music founder already has albums with Gensu Dean and Durag Dynasty under his belt, has contributed heavily to the latest Almighty project and began working with Rasco on the long awaited Cali Agents reunion LP. Despite this full plate, the underground stalwart teamed up with producer DirtyDiggs for a ten track EP due out September 10. PA gives hip hop heads exactly what they want, but has offered some nice wrinkles on “High End Cloths” with guest appearances by fellow West Coast veterans Mac Mall and B-Legit. [Full Preview]
