The Road to SXSW: Torae
The DJBooth is proud to announce that Torae will be rocking on our stage for this year's SXSW music festival in Austin. Known for his relentlessly on point rhymes and classic style, Torae (born Torae L. Carr) hails from the hip-hop epicenter of Brooklyn, New York.
Torae first gained recognition by collaborating with production legends DJ Premier and Marco Polo, going on to receive critical acclaim for his collaborative LP with Polo, Double Barrel. Since then he's worked with some of the game's most well respected artists, from producers like Eric G., Black Milk, and Khrysis to emcees like Skyzoo, Sean Price, Wale, Talib Kweli and more.
Having recently released his second album, For the Record, Torae can be found tearing down stages across the globe - including our SXSW stage.

Have you previously performed at SXSW?
After hearing so much about SXSW over the years, in 2010 I finally had the chance to perform as part of the Duck Down Records showcase. It was an amazing experience to get out to Austin & take in all that SXSW had to offer. I also had an opportunity to perform in front of a new audience I previously hadn't been able to reach. That was my first official SXSW show.
What are you looking forward to most about the experience?
Once you get a chance to perform during SXSW you want to do it again & again. So with my new album recently released I'm looking forward to getting out to Austin and rocking for the people who've been requesting it. Also being a part of what D Booth is doing is an added bonus. They've become a top tier site at showcasing the best new artists and this showcase is a further indication of that.
What fellow artists are you most excited to see perform?
I don't know too much of who'll be down there but off top I'm hearing Nas is rocking so that should be dope. Also want to check people I haven’t seen live yet, including Alice B, I've heard a lot about her so hopefully I get to catch her set.
What are you working on in the weeks/months to come that our readers/your fans should know about?
SXSW falls right on schedule with the vinyl release of For The Record so that's something I'm excited about. With the world going so digital lately it took a lot of fighting and hard work to get a vinyl release but as someone who's here to preserve the culture of hip-hop it wouldn't be right if I didn't release my project on vinyl. Expect a bonus cut on the project as well.
There are also videos for For The Record & That Raw that'll be debuting around this time; and we plan to shoot the video for Shakedown while down at SXSW. We’ll have plenty of merchandise for sale and will be giving out download cards with some Torae music free of charge to the fine folks down in Austin. Looking forward to this being another great year!
If you'll be in Austin on Saturday, March 17, you'll want to check out DJBooth's SXSW stage, featuring Freeway, Skyzoo, Thurz and many more. For all things SXSW, including information on purchasing passes, check out A3CFestival.com.
