Meet Erik Hassle
These "Meet" pieces just might be my favorite feature series; sharing music and turning people on to new dopeness is my favorite hobby. I don't think y'all realize how many BandCamp searches I do or how many hours I spend sucked into the ever-dangerous YouTube black hole. I have even been known to investigate some non-English speaking blogs to find the best the world has to offer. Thankfully, I didn't have to take a crash-course in Swedish to find Erik Hassle. In fact, I didn't have to do much work at all. With an interview and link to his (relatively) new EP, Pepsi already did the hard work for me.
Unlike most "Meet"s, where I know instantly, at first, with Erik, I was on the fence. The talent was there, but it was just so outside my comfort zone, I wasn't exactly sure how I felt. However, the more I listened to his material, the more I liked; his sound definitely grows on you. I think the best example of this, is "Pathetic". The first half of the song, something just felt off, but on the back half I found myself really enjoying it. The way his vocals blend with the electro-splashed production gives the song so much life after halftime. If you ask me, when the beat is more lively, and there is more going on in the song, Hassle is infinitely better.
His voice still has enough power when the mood is softer and more emotional ("Ready For You"), but it can also seem mildly flat when compared to tunes like "Innocence Lost," which just might be the strongest tune from his recently-released Somebody's Party EP. Regardless of his tone or vibe, one thing is for sure: Hassle has a bright future. For the hip-hop heads who might need a little more motivation to step outside of their box, I could definitely hear him laying down some hooks or even, pulling a Weeknd, and taking over the song as the guest feature artist. His voice is irresistible, making it perfect for a hook. Hey, he already works with rappers; check out the Vic Mensa-assisted "Talk About It". That way, you can hide your love for Erik in a Vic Mensa guise (but we both know the truth).
If Erik struck a chord with you, you can find out more about the fast-rising Swede by checking out his spotlight on Pepsi. Until the next "Meet', enjoy...
