Heat Check: How Do You Feel About Drake’s “0 to 100/The Catch Up”?
For those who are new to the merger, here's the deal. When a new song comes out from the Drake's, Kanye's, and Jay Zs of the game, it seems like everybody in the world talks about. However between the memes, the haters, and the stans, it can be hard to figure out how we actually feel about the song. Now, with the Heat Check, it's as easy as voting Hot, Not, or Lukewarm.
When we came up with the Heat Check idea, it was basically made for times like this. In case you were busy watching "Game Of Thrones" last night, You should probably know that some guy named Drake dropped a new song. Love 'em or hate 'em (or both) Drake is one of those artists who can break the internetz with a release; everybody want's to talk about so that's what we're gonna do. Now that you have had a few hours to properly digest "0 to 100/The Catch Up" let's get the verdict shall we? It's Heat Check time!
I might be in the minority here, but I'm pretty apathetic about this one. It seems like after getting clowned by Jay a few months ago, Drake has been on a mission to prove he can rap all hard. He can, but it's not when he's at his best. Honestly, it feels like he is trying way to hard on this one. It's not bad, but it's just not his strong suit.
"0 to 100" is flat; especially when you compare it to "The Catch Up" part. He's much better when he is more contemplative than aggressive and the production on the back half fits much better. He is just more compelling at the end. On the first half, it feels like he's trying so hard to be tough it ends up taking away from the essence of a Drizzy song. I don't want to hear Drake rapping about cooking crack and "Lil Mouse drill shit", it's not who he is and it's not where he is most effective. Lyrically, sonically, and technically, he is better on the back half, where he's more Drake and less not trying to be Drake. In fact, the end saves the song. I'll give it a Lukewarm rating;"hot" on the back half, "not" on the front. I'm taking the average.
What do you think DJBooth Nation?
P.S.- Is it just me or does Drizzy really love these double tracks?
