Upcoming Hip-Hop Album Alert: Dom Kennedy, Blu, Boldy James & More
Here at The DJBooth we strive to always keep our readers well informed of all the latest album, mixtape and EP releases. So every Friday we will preview the week ahead in new releases, highlighting the hip hop projects, both free and sold, that should be on your music radar. Starting with...
Boldy James "My 1st Chemistry Set"
Detroit emcee Boldy James has built his reputation in the underground through EP’s and mixtapes, but now preps for his biggest release to date, “My 1st Chemistry Set.” The new LP is produced entirely by Alchemist, who further cements his place as the hardest working producer in hip-hop today. With ALC backing him, James’ profile has risen and newfound attention has been brought upon the Motown rhymer. We may be looking back years from now at “My 1st Chemistry Set” as the breakthrough album for Boldy James. [Full Preview]
Dom Kennedy "Get Home Safely"
Leimont Park repping emcee Dom Kennedy has carved out a niche as the summer soundtrack provider. So, it was a bit of surprise to see summer come and go without a new album or mixtape from Kennedy. The Los Angeles emcee will step out of his comfort zone, however, with the fall release of his sophomore independent album “Get Home Safely.” DJ Khalil disciples The Futuristiks are heavily involved once again, so it’s hard to expect a drastic change from Dom on “Get Home Safely.” We shall see if fans are as receptive to his stylings as the cold weather (for most of the country) begins to set in. Black Milk "No Poison No Paradise"
Black Milk has established himself as one of the top producers in the game, but it’s his evolution an emcee that has made him one of the best all-around artists in hip-hop today. Following side projects with Danny Brown and his group Random Axe, Black Milk is back on the solo tip for his fifth studio album, “No Poison No Paradise.” With only one of the full-length's thirteen tracks not produced by Black himself, NPNP is a true showcase for what Black Milk is capable of creating. And as his lyrical prowess has grown, the Detroit native has continued to add new wrinkles to his production. There’s plenty of anticipation to see if Black Milk can top 2010’s “Album Of The Year” with his latest effort. [Full Preview]
Blu & Nottz "Gods In The Spirit EP"
Blu wowed the hip-hop world with his outstanding, Exile-produced debut, “Below The Heavens,” back in 2007, yet he’s subsequently released a series of inconsistent projects over the past six years. Perhaps he is a victim of the high expectations set upon him following the release of such a critically acclaimed debut, but Blu hasn't measured up to standards that fans and critics alike set upon him. However, working with another talented producer may be just what the doctor ordered, as the Cali emcee has linked up with Booth-fave Nottz for a quick hitter EP titled “Gods In The Spirit.” The six track project from the pair is saturated with guest spots, though, so it may be tough to truly gauge what kind of creative chemistry these two have off one EP.
